Anyone know what THIS is ???????????

A buddy just bought a truck, and asked me if I had any idea what this thing is:

The two wires together go down to some kind of probe in the exhaust. It is down below next to the tranny. The yellow wire goes to a 30amp fuse link directly to the power side of one of the batteries. It is not connected. The green wire goes somewhere behind the dash. He has not located it yet, but will do so this afternoon.

Whoever had it before added this on top of the factory fuse box under the hood. Told him it looks a little elaborate for a pryo gauge. All the labels have worn away with time so there are no clues. It is obviously aftermarket, but we have no clue what the hell it is.

Do any of you guys do? TIA!

not a clue, bud. I would think the green wire is a signal wire, like are other a/m gauges are..(glowshift gauges anyway)

I don't think that matter. Mines a CA truck and I don't have one.

If you don't need it ripe it out. It was running something after market is my guess. 30amp fuse, maybe a amplfier, etc..

Wobbleshaft exciter capacitor, aftermarket style.Much easier to add this than replace the oem part. Also can be a part of the headlight fluid monitor circuit in the 2002.5-2003 trucks.

Was wondering that, but had never seen one. It was the only reason we could think to have a probe in the exhaust, but it is pretty far from the Turbo.

What kind of pyros use this?

The red and yellow wire is a type K thermocouple. Think of it as a temp probe. The green and yellow wire is more than likely and output going to some type of a pyro gauge or display that was once in the truck. We use those probes all the time where I work.

The yellow is going to power at one of the batteries, but is not connected. Your description sounds likely, really wonder if it is for an LCD display or a regular style gauge. That way it would be easy to retrofit a regular EGT gauge.

I would guess it goes to power a LCD type display since it is not a like wire. For example a pyro gauge has to have the same wire from the probe to the gauge to get an accurate reading. This is due to it being a certain composition (chromel {90 percent nickel and 10 percent chromium} – alumel {95% nickel, 2% manganese, 2% aluminium and 1% silicon) in your case with the red and yellow paired wires. Now more than likely the box is the converter that puts a signal piggyback on the power wire that would go to the LCD type gauge. Your gauge would then use the 12v to power the gauge and the signal to display your temp. OR your missing some wires coming off the black box that would go directly to the signal side of a gauge.

Definitely sounds right. Going to see if Google can point me to a similar one for some more info.

Thanks!!
