Slightly OT-Facebook

Like everyone else, it seems, I have a Facebook account. I rarely go on it, maybe once a month for 5 minutes just to see what is going on. The only reason I set up an account on Facebook is because I needed to get in contact with a person about truck and he only communicated via a Facebook account.

I have been friended and have friended quite a few FTE members, when I get an email to friend some one I just click "accept", but rarely see that they have posted something until 2-3 weeks or more after they posted. I just don't get the popularity of the site. I much rather banter back and forth here on FTE. For you guys who have posted to me on Facebook I apologize for ignoring your posts, I just don't go there all that often.

Anyone else in this situation?

I quit facebook when the granddaughter's account was hijacked and the crap started to spread. Have not been back in about a year.

I've never felt the need for a facebook account. Many folks say I need to embrace social media for the good of my business, but I waste more than enough time here. Personally, I've never cared for the aspect of anybody being able to post anything they want on your page, whether you like it or not. And I don't see how that can be good for business.

Bob, I'm hurt! You didn't "Friend" me?!

Don't get me started... I joined to look up high school buddies prior to my reunion. I am simply appalled at the time some folks put into their pages, the unbelievable amount of crap on there, and as mentioned, the total disregard for discretion in posting personal information. I closed my account but I suspect once it's there, it's there for good.

I also set up a facebook account a couple years ago to get in touch with some friends I had lost touch with but after that it was hit and miss and I guess I just didn't get it? and as just mentioned way to much information just being put up there. So I deleted my account in March but I'm sure all my info is still there somewhere.
I would much rather talk with all yall here then read random dumb things that all my "friends" did every waking hour of their day...

Ross, if you had requested to be my friend early on I'd have done with your request I did with all the other, just clicked "Accept" and then not read anything you posted. I have over 150 "Friends", about 145 I don't know who the heck they are.

This basically sums it all up, too bad it's for a non-Ford truck vehicle:

I purposely do not use facebook for the sole reason that I see so many people today who think that it is the do-all end-all of personal relationships. Some of these kids don't even know how to talk with another human being anymore...those Toyota commercials are right on the money! Two of my wife's nieces came to San Diego to visit a couple of weeks ago, they spent their whole time with their noses in their phones. I took them to one of the best Mexican restaurants in town and they ordered a bean burrito...I should have just gone to Taco Bell and saved some money for the truck.

Those that use it, are probably not going to post in this thread, lol.

I'm taking a liking to instagram. Mostly all hotrod and Americana photos without the FB drama.

I have a Facebook account for the sole purpose of "spying" on other people. I have some rental properties and search for Facebook accounts of potential tenants. Frankly, I think it's rather stupid to put so much personal information on a site so easily accessible. That said, it's help me weed out a few folks so I guess I shouldn't speak ill of it!

Here's the way I look at FB-- I sometimes wonder if I truly have five LOCAL friends who would climb out of bed and come pull me out of a ditch at midnight tonight if I asked. So I certainly don't need 700 nosy facebook "friends". I live in a small town. It becomes the gossip line in a place like this. I know people who literally post when they go to the bathroom it seems. I work with people who seemingly live their entire life through FB. I watched the movies "Surrogates" once. It reminds me of what FB could eventually become, with people laying around in their pajamas while these good-looking robots live their lives for them. Plus my job is another reason I don't do FB--700 "friends" who can instant message me there could get out of hand in a hurry. I'd much rather hang around with you guys and run up 2000 useless posts here yacking about life, common interests, and old trucks. But I will say this--it does seem to help extended families who are scattered about the world keep in touch. But does grandma need to know or see all of the things that get posted on your "wall"?

This is exactly what the guys on the radio are always warning about, especially to young people who haven't begun their adult lives. There is a place on local radio advertising that they will weed out job candidates by searching social media, Facebook. My kids are on it all of the time and some of the junk their friends post is amazing. It can come back around to bite them in the butt some day. I see in your case if some one is posting about all the wild parties they host or if they get high every night, who wants to rent to or hire a person like that.

Doc, I think it's great for that purpose, even with Truckstock it would be nice to go to a focal location on the net and see what the latest updates are on the event. The main problem for me is I wouldn't check in on a regular basis to be kept up to date. A couple of cousins we've only seen once or twice since their family moved to Las Vegas over 30 years ago found my brother. The problem is they're a biker family, full blown, bragging about all their outlaw biker adventures on FB. They've been threatening to come up for a visit some time soon.

I have no life, lol.

Instead, I've finetuned every one of the folks on my friend's list down to FTE'ers, Hambers, FTF'ers, FTBCF'ers, and Darkside Realmers. All I see all day everyday, is hotrods, old trucks, old iron in general, and the occasional Republican conservative slant. I live, breathe, and totally immerse myself into these things, and that's it. I have no non-automotive family members on there, as they don't care to see my truck of the day photos, or any other stuff I post. I have no friends on there that talk drama, I don't have time for that, I delete them. However, I don't mind the occasional Poverty Flats dinner photo, as that's midwestern home cooking that I miss, lol. For me, it's just another outlet of hotrods, old gas stations, and old trucks.

EDIT: I totally understand the reasons for not liking it as mentioned above, just that I don't subject myself to all that anymore.

Just so you guys know...you can adjust all of your privacy settings to limit what people see on your entire page. You can basically make it your name (or whatever name you want to use) and nothing else.

Then it just becomes a way for people to search for you and send you an email. Which I think is kind of cool, since we have all lost touch with a lot of people throughout the years. It's really not that big of a deal.

I think there are definitely positive aspects to facebook, but y'all are right that there are negative ones too. People do waste a lot of time, neglect "real" relationships, and share too much on there.

I don't apologize for having facebook though...and I am not ashamed to say that not a day goes by that I don't look at it for at least a few minutes. Same goes for FTE...as I dont think the pretend world of FTE is that different from the pretend world of facebook.

I dont have FB or a cell phone, my wife does just in case of an emergency, during the 34 years in the telecomunications buisnes. I programed everything from old cord switchboards (via relays diodes ect), PBX rooms, the 911 systems for 11 agencys, the game needs of tv networks for all the games at candelstick park (home of the 49ers), home phones, pay phones and more. Heck our town musium displays one of the old 557 swithboards I used to maintain. The point to all this is Im tired of programing a device that will be obsolete in a year. I wont do it, and I think its more likely than not, harmfull to the social skills of our kids and grandkids. Ive lookd at my wifes fb to see a picture of our grandkids but that it.In this day and age of identity theft it seems silly to put your life on the net.
