x2, I didn't read it all the way and was wrong in my earlier post. OP does need to pass inspection and the tampering with the converter willl be obvious.

Best leave it alone until you can read the LAW, not what some guy in a shop says, that says you are exempt from all inspection.

What is your GVWR btw?

I would look for smog inspection to get tougher, especially in a state like NY, vs. easier.

Thanks & reps to peter_x for catching that.

His GVWR is almost certainly above 8500 since he has a 460 (only F250 HD and higher). If it were below, all it means is that it would be an OBDII inspection as it is a '96 or later.

Personally i don't care if you remove the cat or not, but here is some food for thought.
That restriction that the cat provides lowers the HP and TQ curve. For a race car higher cureves are better, for a 4x4 where you want your peak Tq dowm low you need the back pressure.

I was hoping this myth would not find it's way in here. Back pressure is not a requirement for torque down low. All it does is produce low torque throughout the entire curve. What you are looking for is velocity, not a restriction. Back pressure is the result of a restriction.

I am not trying to start another pi**ing contest on this subject. Just making sure to point out the "back pressure" myth has been busted many times.

I never said it was required to make torque, what I said is back pressure lowers the torque curve. Me personnaly I want my TQ curve to start lower in my truck that I bought for towing with my engine operating at the lower RPM's. All things being equal, cam intake and heads, a more restrictive exhaust will lower the TQ curve where a free flowing exhaust will raise the TQ curve. Yes I know one of the key aspects of making TQ is velocity in the intake. i am not new to engines and engine building despite my being new to this forum. On my 73 Nova I have done several Dyno's after making changes so I have seen this in real life. like I said I am talking over all Tq curve not peak torque. So pee away, i have an umbrella.

A second try

From an earlier post:

The low-enhanced emissions inspection includes a gas cap check and a visual inspection to find evidence of tampering and to prevent malfunctions in the air pollution control devices.
Better ask your mechanic if he's gonna put it in writing that he will foot your fines and the restoration of the missing smog devices if you try to pass a visual with a missing cat and fail.
