The nuts on the inside of the support where the hinge bolts to have come loose. Is there a way to fix these or do I need to find a new hood? I have thought about just putting a kit on to open the opposite way. I really would like to keep it opening the stock way. What are you opinions?
Pappy, are you saying the threads are stripped in the holes where the hinge scissor arms bolt to the hood? If so that's a common problem. Mid Fity offers a couple of options. One is an oversized hood bolt, instead of a 5/16" threaded stud, it is a 3/8". You have to drill out the tack welded nut holes in the hood and re-tap them. The other, if you are missing the tack welded nuts, is an insert kit where you place an internally threaded sleeve in the holes, and then when you tighten them with a special T handled type of wrench (included with the kit), will make those inserts expand and will wedge them into the holes. It is supposed to be a good fix. And of course the flip hood option. Mine is currently stock, but I do like the option be being able to go that way. On my hood, the bottom bolt holes are stripped. I found I could reach up and just inside enough to thread a 5/16" NF threaded nut onto each side. Then tightened up the bolt. That seems to work good. Too bad you can not reach the top hood bolt ends! Eventaully when the top ones go, I will probably just remove the hood, then drill and tap the holes for the Mid Fifty replacement 3/8" hood bolts. Hopefully when I drill thru the tack welded nuts, I won't drill through the side of the hood too!
Sorry, after re-reading your post you did mention that the nuts were loose. Then I am thinking that option #2 the Hood Nut Repair kit from Mid-Fifty stock#82012 would probably be your best option. Thanks again!
If you are good with a welder, drill out the stock nuts (like a 1/2" hole and tack in new 5/16" fine thread nuts. If you weld in new nuts, screw a bolt into the nut to hold it while welding and from keeping slag from getting into the threads. lThe kit from Mid-50 is another option.
the nuts get torn loose from overtightening the hinge bolts. They are shoulder bolts and are supposed to be just barely snug, that's why they have safety wire holes in them. After snugging, use a socket in your fingers no ratchet, loop a soft wire thru both heads to keep them from loosening. Ford used a simple loop with a single twist to connect the ends, but if you want to do a figure 8 twisted safety, go ahead. Don't forget the wavy spring washers to keep the hinge arms from rattling.
