Rear ends

Was reading an issue of Streetrodder and I found a list of widths of Ford 8 and 9 inch rears. Many of you may now this info, but I thought I'd post it for those who don't.
9 inch
65-66 Mustang 57 1/2 inches
67-70 Mustang 59 1/2 inches
71-73 Mustang 61 1/4 inches
77-81 Versailles 58 1/2 in
57-59 Ranchero and Wagon 57 1/4 inches
66-77 Bronco 58 inches (5on 5 1/2 bolt circle)
77-81 Granada/Versailles 58 inches
67-71 Comet, Cougar, Mustang, Fairlane 59 1/4 inches
64 Falcon 58 inches
67 Couger 60 inches
8 inch
74 Maverick 26 1/2 inches
75 Mustang II 57 inches
Hope that helps next time you're at the junkyard.

I'm not sure on the others but it's worth noting that the Mustangs had 7.5", 8" and 9" rears in them. The 9" ones tended to be in big-block cars and tend to be sought after, I'd like one myself for mine.

Just didn't want anyone to think if it came from a Mustang it's a 9" everytime as sometimes rear ends can get confusing as to what was in what.

Wild mule p!ss info! Where the pinheads at this rag got it from, I dunno.

Many of you may now this info, but I thought I'd post it for those who don't.

9 inch

65-66 Mustang 57 1/2 inches
7 1/4" I-6 / 8" V8 / 9" Shelby GT350 only.

67-70 Mustang 59 1/2 inches
7 1/4" I-6 (some) / 8" (some I-6) & V8 except 390/428 / 9" 390/428 only.

71-73 Mustang 61 1/4 inches
Could be either an 8" or 9"

77-80 Versailles.
1976/80 Granada/Monarch 58 1/2 in all with rear disc brakes.

57-59 Ranchero and Wagon 57 1/4 inches

66-77 Bronco 58 inches (5 on 5 1/2 bolt circle)

77-81 Granada/Versailles 58 inches
No Versailles after 1980, pinheads eliminated Monarch. 1981/82 Granada a Fox body, different dimensions than previous.

67-70 Comet, 1967/71 Cougar, Mustang, Fairlane 59 1/4 inches
1971 Comet same as Maverick / 9" = 390/428 Mustang/Cougar Fairlane/Torino Comet only. Others could have 7 1/4" or 8."

64 Falcon 58 inches
No 9's in any Falcon. 7 1/4" or 8" only.

67 Couger 60 inches
289 = 8" / 390 = 9"

8 inch Pinheads missed all the above.

74 Maverick 26 1/2 inches

75 Mustang II 57 inches
(sigh) Pinheads couldn't even get this one right. 6 3/4" 2.3L I-4, some 2.8L V6's / 8" some 2.8L's, 302.

Hope that helps next time you're at the junkyard.
It might now, since I made all the corrections, and...

How many peeps (especially if not dyed-in-the-wool Mustang "nuts") can tell the difference between an 8" & 9" since they look almost identical?

How many peeps can tell the difference between a 1974 thru 1978 Mustang II? 1978's could have a 6 3/4, 7.5 (first year available), or an 8.

1977/80 Versailles basically a rebadged 1977/80 Granada/Monarch. Only with rear discs do Granada/Monarch have a 9. Otherwise, could be an 8" or a 8.7" WER rear axle.

All the above have specific right/left axleshafts. I can see it now, a peep snaps a right shaft, goes to the JY, pulls a left shaft, then cusses a blue streak when finds out it's wrong.

Bill, I do wish you would tell us what you really think. I'm sure Zoot and the rest of us are not sure.

Seriously though . . .great information as usual.

Did I say it was your fault? No, of course not. It's the pinheads at Street Rodder that have no clue. Oughtta be keelhauled for printing that crap info, then strung up on the highest yardarm.

If I may add a couple corrections to your corrections;

65-66 Mustang, All Hipo 289 K code Mustangs, not just Shelby's came with the 9" rear.

67-73 Mustang/Cougar, All Hipo 289 (discontinued after 67 model year) and any car equipped with the 351 or larger engines (69 and newer) got the 9" rear.

The thing is, there are no parts catalog applications for specific vehicle rear axles. The axle tag decode charts do not list rear axle sizes, just the ratios.

I don't recall whether K cars came with 9's, all the catalog says is that 9's were available in 65/66 Mustang's.

I know the GT350's came with 9's, as myself and longtime pal Rik used to hang out at Shelby's "factory" adjacent to LAX.

Rik's mom was a close personal friend of Shelby, hubby #2 was a US/Argentine race car driver and team mate of Shelby.

Shelby had a bum leg, his personal Cobra had MX Cruise-O. One day, Shelby drove the Cobra to mom's house in Beverly Hills, said to Rik & I, take it out for a spin.

1969/73 Mustang available with the 351W, 1970/73 Mustang available with the 351C 2V, 351C 4V and 351C CJ.

The 351C 4V & 351C CJ were available with C6 or 4 speed, came with 9's. 351W & 351C 2V came with FMX or 4 speed, could have either an 8 or 9.

btw: John Lennon wrote a song, recorded it (on a 1968 Beatles album) based on what Rik did during a stay in India while the Beatles, Rik and his mom (I don't think they knew each other beforehand) were staying at the Maharishi's compound.
