Why does crank time vary?

I mean typically it will crank in just a few seconds but lately when cold it has taken twice as long. Am I over thinking this or is this the beginning of something new. Aithough I have owned this truck since new I am an occasional driver and much more accustom to gassers just firing up. My truck typically behaves the same way but lately is noticeably longer.

I was doing research on this today. My crank times can vary from immediate fire to 3-4 sec. From what I've read, it's not uncommon for 5-6 sec crank times and more common than you think for the randomness we're experiencing. I'll be interested to see what others have to say about it.

I had the same issue. Same symptoms. Turned out I had an O-ring on a dummy plug in the high pressure oil system failing. The engine won't start until that oil system gets up to a certain pressure.

I've always had the issue with my truck and recently upgraded the dummy plugs, standpipes, and STC on my 05. Starting time didn't change though. Must be something else on mine.

Me too, vectrex. Just had all my upgrades about 3k ago and start times vary. Maybe I am over thinking it but I am definitely not imagining it.

the wrong oil filter cap can cause this

Also HPO Leak could do the same

those of you that have updated some of the HPO parts ie STC & Dummey plug & Standpipes thats Great but Oil Rails under the valve covers could leak at the top of the injectors and depending on what inject oring leaked the rail may drain alittle or Alot

Great. Is there anything on this engine that isn't prone to failure?

I try to be optimistic, but when EACH LINK in the chain is weak, kinda means you got a bad chain.

BTW, I have the OEM cap and filter.

mine would crank and start in half a second, every time.. then it started
taking longer and longer to start... over about 4 months. the high
pressure fitting on the HPOP was in pieces, it seems.

finally it went off for new EGR cooler, oil cooler, and head gaskets, etc.

now it starts fine, half second crank.

that is all i know about it from my experience.

cranktimes very greatly.
its a huei system..
has to have good oil in it.
oil temp will change start times.
outside temp will change start times.
voltage available will change start times.
injector sticktion issue will change start times.
the list goes on.
in winter we can see 10sec start times just random.

the expansion valves on the AC are bulletproof............

this forum is a distillation of everything that can go wrong with a
6.0, culled from the entire set of 6.0 owners, everywhere.

now, if you have fully charged batteries, clean coolant, regularly
changed oil, good fuel filters, most of this ugliness will not darken
your door. if you don't pay scrupulous attention to these things,
your life will suck.

lets not forget something. TONS of these trucks were used by
construction companies, getting rode hard and put away wet.
and then sold.

if you bought one of these used, who maintained it before you did?

there were problems with the head bolts, especially the first couple
of years, but a lot of that can be traced to EGR cooler failure.

mine seems to be working pretty good at the moment, a month
and a half ago, i was sounding just like i suspect you feel.
once you spend a pail of money, it gets better.... i think.

Thanks for input. This morning I cranked right up. It was a lot cooler than the other day. I think I have a lot to learn about this truck. I really love this truck and am committed to it but with my limited knowledge it is easy for me to get a bit paranoid. I love the signature comparing it to the Apollo 13 laughing my head off
