dependable 302 build

Well ive got a '72 302 with heads marked 68 302 marked dooe b. Are those good heads for a reliable motor. Im going to get a spring and valve job done. Should I have anything else done? Like shave or porting? Im just looking to get a decent amout of tourque. Id like to get about 250hp and 300lbs. I already have a edelbrock 600cfm 1405 and I know its a little big but I figure theres a way to adjust it.
This is what im planning to buy, but suggestions are very welcome,
-2.25 h pipe with summit headers
-edelbrock performer intake
-procomp hei dizzy
-50000 volt coil
-timing chain, double
-3.50 rearend gears with 29" tires, what would go with? c4 tranny
-and a cam ( this is were it gets tricky)
Im thinking one of these three, which would you choose, or would you get something completely different.
-CompCam Part Number: CL31-115-4 $238
-CompCam Part Number: CL31-230-3 $230
-Edelbrock Part Number: 2122 $170 (the one I was really thinking about)
Thank you for the answers in advance

Sounds like a nice combo. Ford didn't have much of a selection of heads back then. I hear a lot about the GT40-P heads from the mid 90s Exploder or Mountaineer. I can't help much with cam choice, best to call their tech line and tell them what kind of driving, gears, tire height and target rpm range.

I've ran from slightly built to pure wild those heads should run well being Pre smog but later model heads run better like late mustang or the gt 40 p head runs real nice I'm running the procomps on my new motor for my unibody and there a nice bang for your buck 600 for a set is the way to go if your gonna have a set rebuilt gonna cost 3 4 hundred anyway might as well have aftermarket that flows well easy horsepower the edelbrock cam would be nice and easy at idle I would run cl35 600 4 that would run real nice

Ive got a machine shop that said they would do them up real good for $250. So i think im going to be going that route unless I can find some e-7's off craigslist for a reasonable price. Will they bolt up to the headers because I orderes those already? Also will everything in the intake line up right? thanks guys

well i found a pair of gt-40 heads on craigslist for $350, they have a new valve job already. Will everything bolt up right? headers and intake wise? Will they flow $100 better than my heads? Im using long tube headers from summit for a '72 f100 302.

Go with the gt-40 heads. They are worth up to 30 hp over those old 68 heads. I would go with the Comp 31-230-3. It will put you well over your 250 hp goal with the gt-40 heads. Just make sure you upgrade the springs with the cam.

you think that those heads along with that cam will let me smoke my tires a little bit without too much break tourqe-ing

Just make sure that the heads are gt-40 and not gt-40p. The p head will still bolt on and outflows the gt40 but requires a special header due to spark plug angle.

Im starting to think I should just build these d0oe-b heads right now, hardened valve seats, new valves, seals, new valvesprings, and a little clean up porting for the price of the gt40 heads.

I would still go with the gt40 heads . You start with bigger valves compared to the old ones. Who says you have to pay $350 for the heads? Talk the guy down. Times are hard. You might want to check local machine shops as well. They may have a pair that someone never picked up for the price of the work.

i think id rather put 350 in some gt40 heads than put 350 in my stock shi* heads. I can probly sell mine on craigslist for 40-50 bucks. I figure someone looking for a stock rebuild might be interested in them.
