I am in the middle of redoing my 97 CCSB.
The entire truck was coated with Zeibart when new and it helped preserve the frame. It worked well where it stuck, but where it came off I had pitting.
In order to remove the Zeibart, I used a heated power washer to strip the frame(the black is where the zeibart WAS)
I then sandblasted the entire frame(I made a 4" body lift to give me room to work)
Tomorrow i will POR15 2 coats then 2 coats of Tractor supply Lo-glare black
looks good. i did a similar restore on my 95 f350 but my frame was in alot worse shape. you can look at my build thread and see what all i went through. even my "better" frame was not in that good of shape
I spray my frame with a mixture of used motor oil and a hint of kerosene to thin it every year. It doesn't look pretty but it works and the bolts on the underside never riquire heat to remove them.
she's going to look some nice soon.
sure takes a long time though.by the time you apply the marine clean, then prep and ready, then spray, then wait until it dries a bit, then re-coat,then dries until just tacky again, then topcoat.it's all worth it of course.
your having a good long day of it out there im sue Brad.looking forward to the pics.
nothing beats the looks of a fresh coat of por15.it's like brand new all over again, only better.
I had to change the frame on a wrecked 86 F150 4x4 I bought back in the late 87. I cleaned painted, spent countless hours making it look better than factory new. Reassembled the truck and within a month the undersides looked like all of the rest of the pickups on the road & I didn't off-road it. Doing it for preservation is good, doing it for "pretty" is a total waste of time/effort. My $.02 worth.
Because I heard POR15 likes to peel off if you apply it to a shinny/smooth surface IE sand blasted metal, new metal etc....
Sandblasted metal is NOT smooth. That is probably the best bight any paint could get. Now new smooth metal, I wouldnt expect anything to stick to, it has no "tooth'
