Most after market pistons, cast especially, use to have a part number stamped on the top of them. Not sure if they still do or not. Ford cast the engine size on their pistons for the 429 and 460 on the side of them next to the pin hole.
ok thanks alot just strokin..im going to get this thing tore down the rest of the way so i know for sure ...btw when i took the vally pan off ..looking down at the cam i noticed the lifters were riding on the edge of the cam!!!like the cam walked toward the back of the motor? anyone ever heard of this?i mean these lifters were almost half way off the cam!
Hi there - I like the orange F-100 in your gallery - be sure to check my gallery and good 'ole Harrison ...
When I do an engine rebuild, I'll always stamp the pistons and rod caps before jerking them out - I've never seen any stamped from the factory whether it be on the GM side of the world or the Ford side of the world.
As far as the lifters not being "centered" that's what keeps the lifters turning while their pumping up-n-down...it makes them wear evenly. I used a cam button in a gas-blown 454 I built once to eliminate cam play but I don't think Ford uses them....
thats quite the nice truck youve got there,,i hope to be feeling the 460 power again soon! now all that power will be going to all four ,,thanks alot for the cam info! later tom
Thanks Flyvee1 for the nice comments. I wonder if 4 wheel drive can really keep all that power on the ground? Harrison is a 2WD and I can break them loose practically whenever I want.
In fact, I've never used "all" his power - he's too scary; runs like a bat out of hades. I've built some powerful 454 Chebies and 455 Ponchos in the past, but the 466+ is a blast to play with!!..
ah yes a four sixty in a two wheel drive! i know the feeling ,,the old crusty green truck in my gallery was the previous owner of the 460 im going to build!original too!,,you know even though only one wheel would let loose most of the time ,,that thing would fly!!!especially on the interstate,,i hated to retire my beloved (spiramint-cruiser)after a faithful 7 years, but the 4x4 came from oklahoma and is pretty rust free ,,dented and dinged all the way down but rust free, hehe ,,hey where did you come up with that original name for the white beast anyway? (harrison) lol that just sounds manley!
Ahem.... Harrison (F-O-R-D) get it, like the actor? . I love Oklahoma - used to drive out of Arkansas and the OK state would be one of my fav's to travel in besides Texas.
Unless Ford has changed in the recent years, all the rods were marked on them for the corresponding cylinder. Even the main caps had their position and an arrow pointing to the front of the block.....
