so, I had my truck hooked up to a computer the other day and both the cold air intake sensor and the engine coolant sensor both read -40 and never changed. the air intake sensor is brand new. any ideas on where to start? I will be working today but will have sporadic internet access so ill check back from my phone. thanks
What computer (scanner) software did you use. The PCM does not monitor engine coolant so that is just a false reading. It does however monitor cold air intake.
It doesn't, there is no physical wire from the coolant sensor to the PCM. PCM uses EOT for engine temp. The coolant sensor just goes to the dash meter. Scangauge wants to display something so it's displaying something else.
The PCM just guesses on that I think. Mine is always on par with my EOT for some reason. I took it off my scangauge though because I know its a false reading.
Air Intake Temperature, that sensor is on the fender drivers side. Usually in the airbox unless you have changed the filter to aftermarket.
I have no experience with the Snap-On so I can't help. On 99+ trucks the PCM does monitor engine coolant sensor. On OBS trucks the PID is called IAT (intake air temp). I've never heard it called "cold air intake temp) but maybe that is what Snap-On calls it.
Ok, well regardless of what it's called, is there some reason it would read -40. I'm assuming that's a default reading, just not sure what could make it think it's so cold...

Don't know, more than likely the scanner. If it faults the scanner should read 57* F as that is the default.
it could also be reading an unused input in the computer that is not linked into the harness.
-40 is common for a disconnected NTC sensor in computer speak.

so, essentially my air intake sensor is "reading" as disconnected? so what would be the difference between a default reading and a disconnected reading. is it just how the computer is interpreting the data? im so confused... thanks for the replys.
