Exclamation Glow Plug Test Procedure?

Thanks for all your help, I am working out all my problems one by one..thanks for the input!

my next need to fix is glow plugs..If yall know of a good thread, you just show me the way. if not, please feel free to show me here.

would someone tell me the proper steps to check glow plugs and best glow plugs to put back in my 1990 7.3?

controler is fairly new. light stays on just a moment and then cycles quickly about 6 or 7 times and then stops.

wiring looks ok , but at GP it has a few plastic caps that are cracked..

will start up fast with heater plugged in..
great start up after warm.

thanks for your help.

the easy way to test glow plugs is with a 12v test light. first clip the light to the postive battery termanial then pull the plug off the glow plug and touch the end of the test lite to the top of the glow plug and if it lights its good it not it is bad. if you dont know how long the plugs have been in there and what kind they are and you have a few bad one i would go ahead and change all of them. them best plugs to use are motorcraft or beru plugs from autozone (i not sure but i hear that they stopped making them)

yup. when in doubt, just change all 8 and forget about them for another 15 years.

you want MOTORCRAFT/BERU ZD9 glow plugs. that is what came from the factory, and are the only plugs that will not swell the tips or burn out.

you can test the glow plugs with a test light by hooking one end to the battery positive terminal, then unplug the glow plug and touch the probe of the test light to the glow plug. if it lights up, the plug is good, if it don't it is bad.

for the wire ends, i replaced the bad ones with bullet style crimp connectors. i believe the size was .177 female bullet connector from napa.

I'd add that if you have 1 bad GP the whole system will not work correctly. In other words the GP's won't work at all with 1 bad GP.

You could check it since you know it should be good and doesn't take anything to check them out. What is a few seconds? Like TJC TRANSPORT says "you can test the glow plugs with a test light by hooking one end to the battery positive terminal, then unplug the glow plug and touch the probe of the test light to the glow plug". All you have to do is move the probe from one GP to another.

nope. the wait to start light should come on for anywhere from 9 to 16 seconds, depending on how cold it is. i cycle the glow plugs 2 times, no matter the temp, and my 88 fires rite up on the second or third turn of the crank every time. if i only cycle them once it sometimes cranks for 5-10 seconds before firing.

tjc..
so you turn the key on and let it cycle off and then turn off the key and turn it back on again and let it cycle again and then crank?

thanks

yup. i turn the key on and cycle the plugs. as soon as the wait to start light goes out, i turn the key off, then back on. this starts the glow plugs cycling again. as soon as the wait to start light goes out the second time, if turn to start.
with the new battery cables and batteries, it fires as soon as the starter engages, or within 2-3 seconds.
