Help on costs
Hey all. Just moved to CA from UT and of course i had the EGR cooler deleted a few years ago and replaced the flex Y-pipe with a straight one. Now it seems I have to replace the EGR cooler and the Y-pipe to pass smog and get the truck registered. I've gotten a quote from the local Ford dealer for 2k for the job. Does this sound right ?. Also to all you CA guys/gals. I have an Edge Insight and was told that that is a guaranteed smog fail because there is something plugged into the OBD port. Does this also sound correct. Any help on these two issues would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Republic of California! We are a nation all to our self. We have our own rules and regulations that must be followed or they will come and get you. Do you really want Feinstein or Boxer knocking on your door?
Just kidding, it feels that way though, did you know Ca has "mobile smog stations" on the road? Tricky.
I had not thought about vehicles coming into Ca. having to get a inspection. Will you have to have one every year or every other year? Interesting topic. We have not been asked to have ours "inspected", it is a 03. Perhaps it missed it or something.

My county (Tuolemne) requires a smog just once on original registration or change in ownership. Most of the rest of the state does a smog check every other year and from what I understand, Tuolemne County will eventually go to every other year smog check. Anyone have any ideas as to weather 2k is a fair price for installation of the EGR cooler and flex Y-pipe ?

2K sounds about right, if it's at a Ford dealer and the labour rate is $100 per hour or North of that.

2k sounds a little high to me. 1.5k sounds better, but maybe a Tech can jump in and let us know the book hours.

but that didn't include the Y-pipe....
now, "while you are at it" rears it's ugly head.... what condition
is your oil cooler in?
i've gotten smogged two years in a row now.... welcome to california...
