Squeaky Cab

Hello guys,

I have a very loud squeaking noise in my cab of my truck. It is driving me crazy. I finally figured out the source noise, I think it is the front cab mounting bolts. The cab sits on some rubber mounting pads. Every little imperfection in the road and it squeaks. It doesn't help by not having carpet & pad on the floor. I can live with the road noise (it's like riding in a tin can) but the squeak has got to go. I tightened down the bolts and the squeak stopped but now it is back. Somebody said spray some wd-40 on it but I wanted to now if anybody else has had this problem and what did you do to fix it or have any suggestions?

Your comments are greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Joe

I think the wd-40 would work but might not last very long.

Yes, the WD-40 will work - for a while.

Light-weight oils penetrate well but don't have much staying power. That's one reason WD-40 isn't usually recommended for door hinges, etc. The best solution for items with small, repeated movements is something like wheel bearing grease that will stay in place for a long time.

Having said that, I realize it's hard to get the grease to penetrate to where you need it if you can't take the connection apart. If you can prop the cab up and remove the mounting bolts one at a time, you can stuff some grease in the bolt holes and coat the outside of the bolts before putting them back in. If possible, lift the corner of the cab up a little and try to get some grease on the steel brackets where they touch each other as well. If you can get the grease in there the squeek will go away and stay away. Otherwise, you can always do the periodic spray-down with WD-40.

Aerosol dry film lubricant might work. It certainly has good lasting power in the weather. It sprays as a liquid and has a graphite feel to it once dry and it really sticks to bare metal. WD-40 is very temporary.

Another thought...what shape are your cab mounting rubbers in? If they are old and brittle, you may want to replace them. they are inexpensive and fairly easy to replace. Worked for my bed.

Thanks for all your input.

I want to do it right and not have to keep spraying it down with wd-40. The bearing grease sounds like the way to go. My truck was frame up about 4 years ago and new pads were installed. I should of done the grease thing when I had it in the shop last week I guess I was just in a hurry to get my truck out on the road it finally quit raining over here. Thanks for all you tips. I think I will pull the bolts out and grease em real good!

Thanks again
Joe
