so ford just skipped the year 1998 with super duty?
everybodys either got a 97 or an early 99 (like me),,,,,
what were the late 97's called?
did production stop for a while in late '97 early '98 or what????
whats the story behind this? my truck was made in may '98 yet its still called an E99...

The "Super Duty" name was actually introduced in 1999 with the new body style truck and engine/transmission upgrades.
There was no 1998 and I'm not sure exactly what was produced in 1997.
Prior to 1999 and the "Super Duty" line, as far as I know, they were just F-250, F-350, etc trucks. Although they are often referred to as "Heavy Duty" I don't know if that was ever a Ford given name.

The 1999 Super Duty originally was supposed to be released as a 1998 but production issues delayed the release. Instead of being late to the party, Ford decided to say that it was really a 1999 model and was being released early. That is why there was no 1998 Super Duty's, but we did have the F-250LD based on the F150 platform.
The "Super Duty" name goes back to 1987 at least, if you aren't being too technical. The "F-Super Duty" was produced from 1987 through 1997 as a chassis-cab only, and was roughly the equivalent of an F450. These trucks were very commonly used as tow trucks, but were also used for all of the other things chassis-cabs got turned into.

Some of the '97's, old square body style, had an HD designation, the LD has nothing to do with the Superduty line. Only HD's Have seen have been F250's, maybe to denote between them and the LD's even though they didn't look alike at all.

IIRC, I had heard something about the 1997 MY trucks (F250HD and F350) were produced VERY late into the year, with production stopping around November or early December. Then, after 1/1/98, they started producing the Super Duty series as the early 99. I'm right there with ya; mine is all e99, build date of 4/98, engine built 3/21/98.
Also, if you look at 97 F250HD emblems, you'll find that they do say "Heavy Duty" under the F250, where the trim designation (xl/xlt) was on the 92-96 trucks. Not sure if the F350 used the same designation or not.

Ford intoduced the F-250LD in 97' to try and bridge the gap. As already mentioned the F-250LD was basically a 97' F-150 with a higher payload and GVWR along with a larger wheel bolt pattern with more lugs.(may have had the 4R100 also)

and just to screw things up even more, there are 98 f-350's out there.
they were 97's titled as 98's.
i bought 3 at auction a few years ago. made in canada, and had metric speedometers in them.

I've bought one of those once! My friend has an E99 f350 06/98 and as for badges all it says is "F350" no super duty below that also It looks like the XL package bust no where says it. I know that the beefed up f150 (f250) was around for a little while, I saw a few at auction last month. Everyone can agree that fords mystery is very confusing!

That is what a freind of mine told me. His brother bough an F-350 back in 98' at the same time he bought his 99' SD. His brother got the HD model with the old body style and he said it was a 98'. I thought there were some out there but never really saw any advertised, sales numbers must have been really low.

The 1998 F250's were actually F150 body styles with heavier suspension. For the 1999 model year, Ford shifted the F-250 and F-350 truck lines to a design mechanically and cosmetically distinct from that of the F-150. The F-350 was not available for 1998, while the F-250 was available that year with the F-150's body.
