So Monday my truck lost all power and I ended up having to get a tow home. After some trouble shooting and some head scratching I called my diesel mechanic friend and he confirmed my fears that the injector pump was shot. I will be replacing it tomorrow. If you guys have any tips or suggestions to make the swap easier I'd be very appreciative.
start with the basics.these engines are too simple to guess at.
make sure you have good compression, cranking speed, glow plugs, fuel, and power to the FSS.
Ip's rerely just quit, they will lose effeciency over time, but complete failure is not commonly mentioned. Like everyone else says I'd look elsewhere first. What troubleshooting did you do? Sounds a lot like a lift pump failure to me. Easy to test, and a lot cheaper and easier to replace. Check power to your FSS also, that is free, and would cause your problem. There are step by step instructional write ups on both of these tests, as well as a very good pump replacement thread. Do a search for them. FYI standard maintenance on the IDI is new (rebuilt, standyne doesn't make our pump anymore) pump and injectors every 100k.
What do you mean by this? Stanadyne sells every single part for our pumps brand new.......
Do they sell a complete pump still? If so do you happen to know the price?I have always questioned any rebuild. It is only as good as the technician (to use the term loosly) working on it. I sure won't question your knowledge on the matter! I was told by a member here that Standyne no longer made our pumps? Looks like LSO answered my question.
I thought this IP would make a good buy because of the fact it says it has a steel advance bore vs a stock aluminum one...any other IP remans do this??

Thanks,
Mac.
I guess it would depend on your definition of "rebuilt".
I don't know why people have this idea that its difficult to find support or builders for our pumps... there is only like 150+ stanadyne shops across the USA.
That being said, yes, you can get a brand new pump built, but none of you would want to pay that price. A head and rotor is about $700.
Ive been busy trying to get my truck running the past few days and I haven't had time to reply. Thanks for all the advice though.
The lift pump was not the issue I replaced it because I thought it might have been the issue. Figured it was worth a shot before I got to the IP. I don't have the tools to test pressure so I figured I'd just swap the $30 pump.
I had to replace the IP twice. The first one decided to spew fuel from the fitting on the bottom where the pin that controls fuel flow enters the pump. (I believe that's its purpose.) The second one went on just fine and the truck started moving under its own power again. Problem is now it smokes whitish gray constantly and is not performing as I expected. I have tried advancing the timing but that just made it perform slightly better.
The symptoms are as follows;
Running hotter than normal, I believe this is because it is running lean.
Oil pressure is lower than normal, Bottomed out earlier today.
Smoking whitish gray, and not producing normal power.
Very difficult to start, I have to use brake cleaner to get it running.
I have finally gotten it to where it can reach highway speeds, but it can't maintain them on any incline.
It will maintain idle, the engine makes more noise than it did previously at idle.
I really need some help guys. I'm self employed and haven't been able to work the past week and a half while my truck has been down. I am hemorrhaging money at this point.
Have you played with the timing, as it sounds like it is off. I have to ask , did you remove the pump gear cover when you changed out the pump? I hope not. Where did you get the pump? Some of the online remanufactures don't have a very good reputation.
your timing is more than likely retarded. When u install a new IP on old injectors the injectors pop at a lighter presser and are causing it to run retarded. advance your pump about a dimes width to the passenger side and it should help.
thats why most people reccomend getting new injecors when doing a new pump.
