E4od working, but not...

Ok here is the skinny. Sometimes you take one step forward and two steps back. My truck is a 1992 F250 ex cab 8 ft bed 4x4 with a 7.3 and E4od. I bought it a few years ago after being beaten on for years and years, and have been giving it doses of love since....new suspension/steering parts replaced, and storing away sheetmetal to blast this thing with a new body and interior in one shot. Finally this past weekend I did it, and all doors/hood release open and close, panels line up decent, everything is rosy...until I drove it.

My trans is now acting up. I am 99.9% positive this is due to me putting a 1993-1994 nose on, as the trans connector (under brake booster) was different and I "took a guess at it". Pictured is the actual connector, another picture I took off of the net illustrating the extra two wires, and the connector cut out of the donor nose, the 1993-94. I phrase it that way as I don't remember what year it was, but remember it was an IDI as well, and the newer bodystyle, but also remember it was newer than my truck. I am nearly postive 1993.

So, my symptoms are as follows. Put the truck in drive, first gear will wind out to about 2k and BANG into second. It will ride that to about 35mph then shift 3rd, but when it does, it goes all the way. The 3rd shift is 3rd gear, overdrive, and the converter locks, all in one shift. The truck dips down to around 1k rpm at that shift and falls on it's face. I can manually shift it to normalize 1-2 shift, but third when shifted manually only stays in 3rd for about 5 seconds before hitting lockup/OD. Also, my overdrive button is no longer working. It will, when pushed, blip the rpms about a 200 rpm difference for a second and then go back to it's low rpm chugging. That button always worked.

So, the only difference here is the nose and it's altered wiring. Does anyone know what I did wrong, or what these two bonus wires do? I am going to cautiously use this for the time being as A. I need my work truck, but B. don't want to blow anything up.

Pics.

Here is the first pic, taken from a forum, I hope that is allowed because it REALLY shows what I think my issue is.

Now, on the left are the four wires that were removed from the 1993-94 style connector (6 pin) that matched the wires in my 1992 4 pin connector. Then there are the other two random wires from the 1993-94 connector, on right. Looks like purple/yellow tracer and green/yellow tracer.

Here are some pics of the 1993-94 connector I cut out of the inner fender.

And here is my current-get-back-on-the-road connector menagerie.

My first go around to wawa I ran without that 4 pin connector even connected, and it started out in what felt like 3rd gear. By all this, I am assuming this is somehow messing with the MLPS, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to rectify it. Thanks guys!

If you changed the wiring to the 93-94 its not a speedo driven VSS it an axle drivin, The P/O wire is your shift pack solenoid #2, LB/Y is the MLP sensor.

Thanks man, I think I understand what you are saying. Here is my issue, it appears there is no extra wire, or no wire going to the trans that doesn't already have a corresponding wire going to it. Ie...no logical place for these to go within the harness.

Now knowing what they are, I suppose I can see what's going to (or from) shift pack 2 and the MLPS. I have seen some diagrams online, perhaps a storebought manual would have them, I am just so burned by these manuals these days that say "take it to a dealer" for every problem north of an oil change.

After you get over the shock of looking at all them wires, It becomes very easy to figure it out...I had to build my harness but the wiring diagrams you might need are in the first page of my album...Its a cinch to fix you may need to remove the inner fender well to see the plug number unless you have enough room to open the wires for the color code.

Kobalt, much thanks. I ran out of time with this truck over the summer and had to try and get in resto time as time allowed, which was harder and harder to come by. I finally got under this thing after saving your pics to my iphone and had it banged out in a few minutes, with the truck finally shifting like usual again! I added to your rep, but just wanted to say thanks again for the help. Great resource here!
