Mine does that every once in a while have to shut it off to reset and down the road months or years later till it happens again. Are you going to be at the Oregon Tech day at Mark's this weekend?
If you are I will have my superchips scanner but I am sure someone there will have AE. If not I am not too far from Clackamas Town Center if you are down this way I can plug it in for you and see what we get. I am up in Vancouver now and then as well.
Lance, I had intentions of going, I'm now finding out I cant go, I really need to get the codes. Maybe we can hook up soon, Clackamas is still a couple hour drive for me.
I will be headed south to Mark's tomorrow morning. Sunday I will be headed back. I could meet you at the truck stop just south of Toledo. I will be staying the night Saturday in Vancouver so I could text you when I am at Toutle. That would give you enough time to get to the truck stop.
If not, go to a transmission shop, they will read the codes for free usually.
So Ken helped me out, it appears that the tranny hit 270+/-, we thought the fluid was low at first which would have probably been the culprit, but after reading again the level is fine, still reddish, odd oder but not sure if it's a burnt smell. I ordered a tranny temp gauge and will get a filter service this week, but I'm trying to figure out if that would have damaged anything, it still seems to shift fine, etc.
Glad you got it figured out. Sounds like you might want to start shopping for a tranny cooler too. I had no idea a high temp would throw a code, learn something new every day.
My appointment is tomorrow, I'll let you know what they say. They too mentioned that even Ford recognizes that the stock cooler is inadequet. They are going to do a flush, filter service and flow test, they said they would be able to figure out if it's the torque converter, which they say is not the best for that rig either, OR, it's the cooler restriction, they want to put a True Cool Max???? Which I guess goes inline with stock instead of a replacement. Supposedly it does not use it unless it needs it, not sure how it knows unless it's pressure related.
Will do, I hope that I dont have to add the cooler. Dont really have the funds. If it's restricted, shouldnt the flush clear that up, or does that mean the cooler is not idequant enough?
The problem you are having is due to an undersized cooler. Your temps climb when you travel slow and the TC is unlocked. With little to no flow of air over the cooler and the TC unlocked, the temps will rise quickly. The larger coolers allow more fluid to be cooled when traveling slow.
A flush that you are getting is where they usually flush the fluid on a machine and replace it with new. You may have them flush the cooler separately if they have the specific machine for it. Ford shops may have it and that is what they do now (if they have the machine) versus replacing the coolers. You still will have a undersized cooler though.
So, I had my tranny service, filter, flush and flow test. Flow test shows 4.5 gallons, which they said was good. But LOTS of shavings, and burnt fluid, which they say are signs of a slipping TQ? I need someone to agree or disagree that it's time to rebuild.
Well you are on borrowed time. If you plan on keeping it look at the $4500-5000 investment to a JW, BTS or HD4R100. You can save yourself $1000 by going with a regular 4R100 from Ford. Getting yours rebuilt may be cheaper, but be very cautious as many people have issues with rebuilds. It shouldn't be that hard to get a quality rebuild locally, but most of the shops seem to struggle for some reason. Many guys get on here after a local rebuild and have problems that cost quite a bit more.
