Idenity Crisis

I recently bought what I thought was a 1976 F150 with a 351m. The previous owner assured he had just rebuilt the engine and that everything was in running order. I knew from the start that this truck was going to require some major work to get it running and looking the way I wanted it to, like taking off the 86' bed and putting the proper one on and lifting and painting it, but there are a few other things that I want opinions on what I should do. First off the truck came with the 78-79 grille on the front that I wanted to switch to the 76 type but after looking closer at the truck and the Radiator support bracket I'm not sure I have a 76! Even though the title says that it is. It also has several hoses going to nowhere out of the Carb. that are plugged up with screws in the end of them, but it runs just fine. (except for the 8 MPG) Should I take this in to have it inspected to see if I have been ripped off? I did get an extra running 351m to drop in it if anything ever goes wrong with it... but I'm starting to wonder if I'm in over my head.

There is place on top of the front right frame rail you can find the serial number stamped. If this checks out as a 76 frame, it's just possible the previous owner took the engine and front clip off a 78-9 truck. If not, and you have clear title, it might be best to leave sleeping dogs lie The 351m wasn't available until 78. You can also check the date coding on your glass for hints as to the year. Is there a 76 build date on the door jamb sticker? Does the door tag match?

Actually for (76) you had a 360\390 and starting in 77 it was a 351m\400 and the I6 that was available. fd

Once I find the number on the frame rail how or where can I check it out to make sure it's a 76' frame? Thanks for you help.

Whoops. 77 it is for the 351M/400. The number on your frame rail is the vin, so it's a 76 frame if it matches your registration. You can post the numbers here and someone will give you the lowdown.
