Powder Coat Diff Covers Inside???

I had both of my covers powder coated and they did inside and outside. The threads were covered but won't this be an issue with oil and heat? They said that it will work better and it would not effect the operation. He also said that sealent would provide a smooth seal and not worry about that - but can I use a black sealent vs the red heat silicone? Sort of freaking out here....

i wouldnt put it on my truck! ive powdered the outside of diff covers before and its cracked....definitely wouldnt leave it to chance to break off on teh iside and float around my gears.....get yourself a ford aluminum finned cover.....much better and you dont have to coat them....

Ugh... You know that feeling when someone says do something and since they are the ones doing it for free you just go along with it. This was it. I didn't totally want it done on the inside but he said he has done it to his trucks in the past. I completely understand what your saying, but I am stuck as I can't afford new covers, nor can I afford to repair if it chips. What are the symptoms I would experience?

Basically I have to put it back but I was hoping someone would say, not to worry - and mean it - lol... It will always make me paranoid so I will be checking out junk yards for a set I can coat the outside only. I hate when something good turns out costing money and being so bad......

Thanks for your advice, 99.9% of the time I follow it, but I can't not use my truck, but maybe just change oil frequently until I get a used set.

I wouldn't put powder coat inside the diff either...
If it were me...I'd get out a wire wheel or a media blaster and remove the power from the inside surfaces before it was re-installed. I'd also clean the mating surfaces as well.

Just my $0.02...

I guess I'm the oddball here. I don't think I'd worry about it if it were me. It's a relatively simple shaped surface with no hard to get to parts that make it tricky. Unless you plan on hitting the cover with something that might dent it, I don't think it will come off or crack if it was done properly. If it wasn't, you'll be able to tell by watching the outside.

My wife's got enough stuff powder coated on her engine and I haven't seen any problems with that stuff yet. A sealed, lubricated environment should be even easier on it in my thinking, but I'm apparently in the minority.

I would leave it also if i had reassurance the oil won't brake down the paint.
