In the market for a 1997 - 2003 4wd F150 and have several questions. The 1997 - 2003 F150 4wd trucks have manual or electric locking hubs? Also are the F150 considered full or part time 4wd. If considered full time 4wd is there a way to convert to part time 4wd for gas savings, less moving parts, etc?
Thanks.
most of them are setup this way--- NOT AUTO.
There is an electric motor on the transfer case that you turn on and it engages the drive shaft to the front. At the same time there is a vacuum solenoid that pulls a pawl into gear in the front axle and engages the half shafts.. This happens when the **** on the dash is moved from 2 x 4 to LO or HI 4 x 4.. So when in 2 x 4, the front axles shafts are spinning with the wheel, but the pumpkin is disengaged and the drive shaft does not turn.

Steve, would it be possible to add manual locking hubs to a 2001 f150 and would that prevent the axles from spinning altogether?
Thanks.
