You can probably notice I'm new here! I purchased my 79 F150 standard cab long bed from a good friend of mine, and his brother referred me here.
So, I've seen a couple of these generation trucks around the area with headache racks on them and I'd really like to get one for my truck. Question I have is what year/model of truck should I order one for? As I'm not sure if anyone makes one just for 73-79
I don't know if anybody still makes headache racks for Dentsides. I built both of mine. If you don't weld then I would try to find a welding shop near you and have them make what you want. The quality will almost surely be better than what you could order and it may even cost less.
Don't buy one that has short brackets that bolt to the front corners of the bed. It will end up causing the bed to crack from vibration. I run 2x3 inch angle iron down the bedside (full length) and weld my racks to them. I usually also run a 1 inch square tube from the rack to the end of the bed for use as a tie-rail. It also helps stiffen the entire assembly.
Not a really great pic, but maybe this will explain a bit. It's the rack on my Crew before I took it off for paint/body work:
I see. Thanks for the advice! I almost figured I could get one for a newer Superduty and just modify that a little bit. I saw a cherry lookin crewcab the other day with one of those louvered ones and it looked pretty sweet. Plus I really don't feel like replacing my back window if something does happen
