Stripped plug threads

Anybody had any experience with stripped plug threads in a 460 Big Block?

Heli-coil the recommended fix or is there another preferred option?

This is in a 1996 F250 Crew Cab 4 x 4.

Heli will be just fine, and is preferred way of many mechanics. Be real careful when starting the tap so as to be true and square.

Thanks for the reply. Can it be done with the head on the motor or should the head be pulled?

Also, anyone know the correct thread insert to use?

I think Helicoil makes a spark plug thread repair kit. It will probably be a 14mm thread. The cleanest and safest way to restore the threads is to remove the head from the engine, but you can do the repair with it still installed, just coat the tap with grease to catch all the metal chips.

They do. Ive used the exact item at least 3-4x by now with no problems. What it is, its a tap you use to make threads in the head for a steel insert. You tap it out, then insert the steel insert with a plug in it to make sure its gonna fit right. Then remove the setup and coat the insert with red loctite and reassemble.
