Well, spark plug whole is stripped or cross-threaded. We can only get about 1-2 threads in and the plug stops like its fully tightened although it isnt. I'm affraid to use a tap,but it looks like i have to unless someone can tell me how to pull the head off. Which is better? Heli-coil or a tap? Thanks guys.
if you are worried about shavings getting into you cylinder, after you use the thread chaser, get a shop vac and suck all of the shaving out of the hole. i wouldn't take the head off for that.
we have a tap for plug holes, should I run it all the way then suck the cylinder with the shop vac to get the shavings out? I put oil over the tap before i use it to cut down on the heat and stuff.
what if i cover the tap in grease, then run it through, and then suck the cylinder with the vac, then let the engine run for about 30 seconds to make sure it all got out?
well you could but most likely the grease will get wiped off by the threads. i guess just get an oil squirter and squirt oil as you go, but you may not even need oil since it is not an aluminum head. it can't get hotter than the head does when it is running.
yeah,i took it out and tried to put the plug back in and it felt like it went in about 5 or 6 threads then tightend real tight. I ran it,she runs fine,im told it should be fine like it is now. she runs real good. im afraid to do any thread cutting with the head on. A guy I know whos a mechanic is gonna call tonite or tommarow morning,i'll see what he says.
just get it rebuilt and have the machine shop fix that hole. it is cheap and far better than getting a head from the junkyard that may be in worse shape than yours and it should have a garantee
