im having a big and starting to be a costly problem one day i noticed that my axel joint was bangin off my lower ball joint so i changed the hub seal (the big one thats you have to replace when you do a axel joint) i also changed the axel joint whle i was in there so heres when my problem starts its works perfect until i go and use by 4x4 then it just destroyes that seal almost instantly i no its in write and everything cause i used the tool from ford to install the seal and it sets the depth it in the spindle ive went through three now and now ive noticed im leaking fluid out he tube now i no theres a inner seal by the pumkin that keeps the fluid from leaking in the tube so is that seal is bad would that cause my outer seal to go bad ( cant see that happaning but you never no) my 4x4 works perfect a little extra info ive changed it over to warn manual hubs and they work good to so i dont no whats going on hope someone can help me these seals arent cheap.
Sounds like the inner seal is bad if you're leaking gear oil out the end of the tube but I don't think that is what's causing your outer seal to be destroyed. Sounds like your axle isn't lined up right and when the 4x4 engages it, it messes the seal up. I've never done the axle joints but is it possible when you replaced them that the joints weren't seated properly causing the axle to be out of line?
be sure you have the right part # half shaft for the year of your truck...
my 2000 had a shaft from a 99 and it was doing the same thing.
put the right shaft in and i have 700 miles on it. no problems when i have my hubs locked so far.
if you were able to fully snap the clips in place when you installed the new u joint, they are good..
the inner seal that goes around the drive shaft and "seals" the axle is really not much more than a dust cap. if you put too much fluid in it, its only got 2 places to go and that dust cap isnt going to hold it.
& if you get too steep on one side... the liquid in the diff drops to the other...
Are the inner hub axle needle bearings good ?? It will let the axle move around and bang the ball joint Zerk fitting if there gone.
a new seal will only hold the axle in the center till you put a load on it..
Also, check the u-joint on the axle for play
The inner seal is just a seal. it dose not hold the axle in place
