The yoke on on the front of the differential that is attached to the pinion gear (after you remove the driveshaft.)

EXv10,

So my buddy who is an ASCE certified mechanic although not a truck expert rode in my 2002 7.3 and heard the super loud gear whine starting at 25mph which gets louder with speed until road noise drowns it out. (this is while in RWD...havent tried in 4WD...dont ask me why...me stupid)

He says he thinks it's the front diff, not the rear diff. I agree because the noise sounds like its coming from under the front seats as opposed to the rear.

Note that this truck was used to pull 30ft motor boats off-road in 4wd regularly.

The gear oil was changed at least twice with synthetic gear oil in last 196k miles (by Spiffy Lubers, so the records show, prior to me buying'er) so I dont think new oil would resolve the issue.

Do I need to swap out the entire unit? Part of it?

Any help would be appreciated...the noise is making me nuts...

Thanks in advance auto,

Lex
