Skillful.....yes (comes from the many times that you have previously parked your truck, you kind of get that built in "curb feeler" ability) , lucky.....definately!!! I agree with backing in, that is the only way I park my truck unless it is absolutely impossible to do so. But anyhow, I'm glad that your truck didn't need a band-aid.

I call it lucky, damn lucky! I try to back in and while most people try to find the closest spot at a store lot; I'm always looking for best exit strategy and don't mind walking the extra hundred yards. The rear camera does help alot.
I will tell you this, there is an automatic electric gate that I have to wait on to get in/out of my parents' neighborhood. Every time I drive through there, I test my perception and try to get as close as I possibly can without bumping it. If I had to guess, I'm probably 2 inches away from it, no contact yet but that's the whole point. Take it as far as you can knowing you won't hit. One day I will throw my son out and have him watch to see how good I have gotten.
My '08 story, big crimp in the right front bumper. I was parking at a hotel, right front had to swing into the branches of the hedge to make the turn. There was a cinder block wall there hidden by the leaves. Big crunch. Courtyard Marriott near Tampa across the street from the Tampa ale house. Never forget it.
2horses just needs a ranch hand legend front bumper w/ grille guard to add to the grille and fit in with Texas.
The only issue is you would need to then worry about damage to the pole.
Oh lord, if I had a big 'ol cow catcher on the front of my truck, I'd probably take out a building or two - not to mention all the small cars I'd accidently demolish.
I have driven my friend's truck that does have one, and nearly hit the vehicle in front me once when we stopped for gas. I was trying to creep up to the pump, and forgot it was there. She reminded me about it - and the winch mounted on it - just in time. I knew then and there I'd be way too dangerous with one.
Ha! True, but I don't want my truckl to have that much character just yet. Another couple of years when it's paid off, maybe.....
Though I have one - I don't like the ranch hands as well as some others.. But - The best part is - hit what you want (or don't want ) get out the rattle can of Krylon and she as good as new...
I dented mine down on the plate that extends below the bumper but that was pushing a 300-400lb. hog trap out of the way of a shredder.... Just a little ding...
Anyway - nice driving Pam - I'd call it skill until proven otherwise....
When I had my 2003 silverado I put a body lift on it and bigger tires. I also raised up the step bars. That required cutting down the brackets. I think I trimmed off about 2".
Long story short, I parked in an abandoned parking lot that was used for the convention I went to. I parked normally and at the end of the day when I got off the buss I went back out to the truck and drove away normally - only the parking lot jumped up and grabbed my passenger side step bar HARD. So hard it was left swinging in the breeze.
There was one of those round light post bases (not quite as big as the one in the picture here) with no light on it anymore covered up by a bunch of weeds right next to where I parked. I never noticed it.
I kicked the light post base, cussed a bit, and tied the step bar up to get home. Out came the grinder and welder again...
I've honestly thought about rigging a camera up there. I can't see crap in front of this thing. I try to back into parking spaces as much as possible. I think it is a lot easier than pulling in most of the time. I usually pull into my driveway and I have my small landscape trailer backed in front of the truck. I can't see anything but the top half of the gate when I pull up to it and I have nearly parked the tounge in the middle of the bumper more than once. I bought one of those parking guides that go on the driveway, but the weight has flattened it out.

It used the be a slightly unsettling feeling to be pulling into a parking space and watch the hood of the small sedan parked opposite just disappear under my hood.... when my fiance' first started driving Evelyn, he'd keep asking Now? Now?, not really trusting me when I said he still had room. Ha! Come to think of it, he saw the bumper of my F150 - maybe he had good reason to doubt! Now though, we're both used to it. Perhaps I'm a bit too comfortable?
