I was traveling back from a fishing trip, and found myself on a long, straight stretch of highway in East Texas. I thought, well, lets let this Lincoln unwind and eased her on up. At about 100 MPH, the truck seemed to bog down like a governor kicked in. I would have kept my foot in it but the straight stretch was running short, so I slowed and made a mental note.
I'm driving a 2009 Screw, 4x4 with a 5.4 engine with no mod's whatsoever.
Seems like I remember the limiter is somewhere around 99mph on the 4.2/4.6/5.4 in the F150s. There could be a dozen limiting factors to why it's set there, but tires are probably the first weak link.
Mine is either 87 or 95mph, either way I don't spend a lot of time there. It's not the speed that gets you, it's the sudden stop with 4 tons of steel trying to keep moving past you that hurts.

I heard that! It certainly isn't something that I would do on a regular basis, if even at that.
A friend of mine had a Mark XIII that was hot off the showroom floor. He claimed that it boosted horsepower considerably. I haven't taken a ride with him since to see for myself, and I neglected to ask him what it did for the fuel mileage. I suppose one could get something like that chip for the 5.4, but thus far, I haven't seen the need. My speed days are long since behind me the pavement. Nowadays, when it comes to breaking the century mark, it's only done on the water.
Hey they're talking about raising the speed limit to 85 soon. Not much longer it will be 100 or unlimited in some areas the way they keep raising them every few years. It's 70 a lot of the roads I drive around here but I still do only 65. Mostly because of gas mileage really starts going down fast when I go faster than 65
Oh god, 100 mph water can only be so much worse. At least pavement isn't normally moving under the wheels You're braver than I am.
Water is as hard as concrete at speed if you get tossed. This isn't something I do on a regular basis. 12K RPM on an outboard doesn't happen very often 'till the outboard tells you to go fly a kite, and some flies loose from its innards. At $6500 for a short block from Mother Merc, it can be an expensive proposition. Knowing that I can get there if I want to is yet another story altogether.
This is a shot of the pilot/driver just before he hits the water, just after his rig acted badly....
This is a shot of the pilot initially hitting the water...
This is the shot of the pilot after he got fished from the water.
The boat he's on the back of is the same as my rig. The pilot is racing again.
Water is as hard as concrete at speed if you get tossed.
Water is much worse. Pavement has more surface tension and doesn't dig in as easily. Once you've got a leading edge underwater, physics takes over and mayhem is eminent.
