This post reminded me I had ordered some LEDs awhile ago with some other stuff and I just never got around to installing them. So I figured it was about time. Here is what I got (from NPD) with following pics:
Note: In all pics Drivers side is LED, Pass. Side is original.
pic 1 amber bulbs part# U-L1157AL (these were sold by NPD but are from HiPo parts mentioned above #1157-30-Y)
pic 2 red bulbs part# U-L1157L12 (each light has a colored sticker on it-these were more orange than red-the light matched the sticker not the label)
pic 3 white bulb part# U-L1156L12 (I got these for the reverse lights but the "red"/orange bulbs were so bad I tried these in the brake lights)
As you can see in the first two, its not much of an upgrade
So the amber are usable, the red ones are crap, and the white one are good.
The white ones are brighter but they are only single contact meant for the reverse lights. They looked really bad in the front, bright but bad color.
If you look on the HiPo site here The amber ones that I have are the "Ultra bright 30" type. The white and red look like the "Ultra bright 16" but were packaged in plain plastic bags from NPD. My pictures are just with the driving lights on, I didn't test the brake lights or reverse lights. From the description this is the LEDs at half power, brake lights would be full power.
From the HiPo site you can get the duel contact lights (1157) in white ultra bright 30, these might be good for the brake lights or the ultra bright 30 type red (if they are actually red) ones might be good enough.
I did get a new flasher too but I think I need another for the hazards.
iv changed every bulb in mine to LED and i love them but you do need to switch to the electronic flashers, i can give you a list of all the bulbs i got i think it came out around $200 with 2 day shipping but it was well worth it, changed literally everything but the headlights.(brake/blinkers,revrs,markers,cluster,dome,lisns plt)the cluster was the biggest difference, i couldnt see my needle at all and now i have to dim it half way!!!
i have talked about this before the best led lights to use for tail/signal are the 2"x6" truck/trailer led lights they have a lot of light compared to the single bulb crap out there and have the resister diode built in and require no mods to your signal flasher you take your stock front/rear light housings out,cut the backs to fit the 2x6 dimentions [perfect fit] silacone to seal, wire them in you will not mess with these again for the life of the truck very bright day or night i used amber for amber red for red but would like to know if some one tried the white if that would make a diffence? i use superbrightled.com for all my dash bulbs, floor lights ect very good products!! i have done all my trucks this way with no trouble
on the truck i might buy its got a flat bed on it, and its got the square taillight/backup lights on it. I was thinking that if i buy it that im going to switch those to LED but from what i understand on here that would make the blinkers not work??
I like the idea of not having to change flashers out, but if we are talking about a one-time deal, it may be worth it.
Changing the flasher is super easy, if it takes you more than 2 min. you're doing it wrong. They cost about $12 and you'll need to replace the one for the turn signals and one for the hazards. With the new one my signals flash at the correct speed (they were too slow before) and now I can actually hear the clicking noise when they blink so I probably needed to replace them anyway.
Mike, if I remember from your build thread you got a new wire harness. Did it come with new flashers?
I got the led kit for the instruments, blue, i only used the blue ones. Daylight hours to long in my area to see what they look like. I closed the shop doors one evening but still was not impressed with them, maybe cleaning the clear plastic inside might help. I do like the blue color.
I found out you do have to insert them like they say or they wont have a ground and wont work. I had to reach up in there and change one after i had installed every thing .
__________________________________________________ ____________ Okay, as I said above I really never got to test them right after i changed them over. So I thought I would bump this up to see how the others have been doing. It gets dark early now and although I like the blue color I chose, they are not any brighter than my original ones. I'm thinking about getting a new clear face cover since they don't cost a lot, at least it should help some. I have found out from post on here that there are better ones out there , i got mine on E-Bay.
