New to forums. Quick Diff question.

To start, Hello. New here but been browsing for a bit as we just bought a 2003 Expedition FX4. Truck has 97k miles and the 5.4L Triton.

Ok so when turning slowly or from a stop you feel and hear a "rubbing" or "shuddering" sound. I've decided from reading around that this is MOST LIKELY the rear diff clutches and I just need to change out the Diff fluid and add 2 friction modifiers since its a little higher mileage.

Does this sound bout right to everyone? I did a wheel shake test and got no play in anything. All the wheels are the same size, 265/70/17 which is what the door tag says they should be. Nitto Terra Grapplers.. not sure that really matters though. Also did a visual check for any rubbing, The tire pressures are all similar as well.

So I guess the only question is... does this sound normal? And, if so... what kind/weight should be used? Is it just typical gear oil? And I'm not sure exactly what a friction modifier is.

Thanks for reading and for any help you may post.

Use the Ford specified fluid from the owners manual. Off hand I think it is 70 weight synthetic. The modifier is a small bottle used to keep the grinding away. Definitely use 2. You can find your manual here...
