fuel guage ?

My fuel guage does not read correct. If i fill the truck up it will rejister full for a while and when driving or if i switch off the truck it drops to empty, which makes the computer read a few miles until empty. could this simply be a bad connection or is my sending unit in the tank shot?. I looked around on the net and found some sending units cost 400 bucks which seems a rip off. Any ideas guys ?

i just read my dct's and it gave me po403,p0405 which are erg codes due to my egr delete i think. My guage started working again at the moment reading correct and the computer mpg was ok also,so maybe could be why its not showing that code?. what is 0460 code. Sometimes my guage works sometimes not.

maybe a bad sending unit. i know mine is possessed. lol. she acts weird at about half-tank. either climbs to full or drops to empty. when tat happens, it always reads "fuel data something error". i cant remember exactly. mine is more like a bad fuel sender unit.

i'll eventually get round to changing it. lol.

Lol. Sorry but It is funny when the damn thing acts possessed.

BTW, for the 05 model, is my fuel sending unit in the back and outside of the tank? I got a diagram from tousley Ford that may suggest that. Please correct me If I'm wrong. Thanks.

Funny that this came up. Yesterday I filled he truck up and went home which is about 34miles and it's still on full. This morning I jump in and it's just above 3/4 of a tank so I thinking that maybe I had some fuel stolen but between the dogs and my location I just don't see that. As I'm driving the gauge it going up to the point that I'm almost back on the the F.
I'll have to check for codes tomorrow.

P.S. Last tank I got 423 miles out of it.

I might be all wet here but something similer happened to me & I had left the ingition on while filling it up (years ago).

After that incident I was reading about a similer problem on other vehicles when you left the ignition in the on position while filling. Now I don't leave it in the on position & haven't had the problem again.

Mine is fine when you fill it up and drive then when you stop and come back it registers full and does not move. Then when I fill it up it works but repeats the above item

So did anyone get the P0460 code to go away WITHOUT buying the sending unit? $299 is allot just for a couple wires and a trip arm!

I had a pretty crazy acting gauge much like these, only mine really acted up when it hit 1/4 tank it would drop to empty within a couple of miles (literally 5-10) and then I even had the computer go into limp mode because it thought it was out of fuel. Spent my 280 on the sender and no more problems, Turned out that on the sender rheostat some of wires were burned right near the 1/4 tank level.

Cheezit has mentioned before that there can be false P0460 codes, and that there was a PCM flash to correct that. So if you don't have the latest flash from Ford, you will want to get that done to correct the problem.

If you have done that and you still have a dead spot on your gauge, then you have to look at the sending unit. First make sure all the connectors are properly seated.

If all else fails, as it did on mine, you will have to pull and replace/repair the sending unit. I just did mine last weekend, and here is the info:

I could reset mine with the Edge Insight. But as soon as the PCM reads an open circuit, it will come back. The PCM expects to always see between 15 and 160 ohms, and every time it sees infinity, it will set the code again.

I would get P0460 fairly often, and then occaisionally I would also get P0463 (IIRC) and that would set the check engine light.

It is possible that CA would fail my emissions test with either of these codes, so I felt like I needed to fix it.
