96 powerstroke idel drop

I turned the heater on in my 96 F250 4x4 Auto Powerstroke Diesel 205,000km today and when I switched to heater control to 'Mix or DEF' and also 'AC or Max AC' I saw a significant drop in idel RPM. I turned it off right away and the idel returned to normal? I tried the heater control again and left it on for 5 seconds and smelt something burning (belt?) but heard nothing squeeling. So I tuned it off. When the heater switch is on 'Floor' or 'Vent' there are no issues (no idel drop or burning smell). Any help or thoughts on the issue would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Could this be an electrical issue?

Sounds like a locked up A/C Compressor to me, have somebody watch it while you turn your A/C or to defrost setting under the hood..

According to my diagrams when in AC (NORM or MAX) or when in Heat (MIX or DEF) the AC compressor is activated, on a 97. My question is why is the AC compressor activated when requesting heat only?

Thank you for the information everyone. I wondered if it was the compressor or compressor clutch. I just didn't realize the compressor is activated in ac and def modes.

I'm not sure Jim, but I think it's got something to do with de- humidifing the air.

It shouldn't be on in heat mode.

Yes, its activited in ac and defrost mode. I think, as yoslick said, your compressor is freezing up and your belt is sliding over it burning.

Thanks again everyone for your help. I'm just hoping that it is a bearing and not the whole compressor.

AC, Defrost and Mix all turn on the AC pump.
