9 inch Carrier
Well I took the carrier out and found that it was cracked all the way around. When I find a new one will I have to reshim it?

Ah, it's the Traction-Lok assembly that is cracked. Yes, replacing it would require that it be set-up again.
If you're okay with using a JY part, then go for it. However, if you're rebuilding the rig, then I would go for new (or better) gears and Traction-Lok assembly for your application (2WD or 4WD) or re-gearing for bigger tires.
Having an emergency 'spare' is always helpful.
