Background: rebuilt motor, short block from one place, heads from another person and pushrods/rocker arm shafts from ebay. Now I know it's not good to mix and match FE's. I've had idle problems (hunting like a vacuum leak, but no leak) and ticking noises, so I went with longer pushrods (twice, up to .060 over) now it runs worse. I figured it was time to check it out right. I bought a pushrod checker from Comp Cams. I found out that the pushrods I was using even the original ones were too long. I can understand the running rough as the valves might be not closing all the way, but a tick also?.
The Comp Cams paperwork I have says to use .030" as a lifter preload after you find zero lash. My range is from 9.49 to 9.56 with the preload. The first set of pushrods are at 9.620 (I think), is this long enough to hold the valve open slightly?. Starting to think I have 2 problems.
