Help!! I think it's possessed.

OK. I tried to search through the 500+ threads on this forum for a topic like mine, but my ADD took over and I had to stop. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving this past year we were driving back to ATL from Lowell, IN. We ended up in stop and go traffic from half way down Monteagle through Chattanooga. The normally 40 minute ride took over 3 hours. On the outskirts of Chattanooga the X took on a mind of it's own. For no reason it started to speed up on it's own, or when I wanted it to go faster it did nothing. I pulled off at the first rest area in GA and let it rest for a while. We then went another 2 hours at the speed limit to Conyers, GA (close to home) when it started acting up again. The next day I took it to a local mechanic who could not make it act up and told me to avoid sitting in traffic with it. Like that's gonna happen.

I am putting this out to the collective wisdom to see if anyone has any ideas as to what happened and what I should do about it.

Not sure if they have a air/idle control sensor or not, but it sounds electronic. No codes? You will need someone with an expensive computer to figure it out I bet. But I bet it will be something simple. May even be a throttle position sensor. Who knows, but please let us know when you find out. I am positive there are guys on here that can probably tell you quickly what the problem is, so hold on. Maybe they can help.

Joyce:

You may want to ask this in the 1999-2003 7.3L Powerstroke section...lots of knowledgeable folk there.....my guess would be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) as stated above, but that is just a guess!

Lots of guys that have throttle problems with diesels seem to come down to the TPS on the gas peddle itself.

Most have a problem of stepping on the peddle and nothing happening. I would imagine it can go the other way as well.
