If it stinks and you have steam it sounds like you are burning it. Probably have some clutches locking up and getting smoked which is why you can roll in drive. Id drain it and see what you got. Check the filter (screen?) and look for material. Doesnt sound good though. Might need to open her up and do a rebuild or get a new trans...
[edit] Just so you know when you have an automatic trans problem like slipping draining it is probably one of the worst things you can do because even though it isnt good, draining out all of the grit suspended in the fluid actually will take away the material it is using and will cause more slippage... I assume youve been adding fluid anyhow but if you drain it you will probably be looking at doing some sort of work to it no matter what..

Well judging by what you said I am guessing the transmission is actually burning the fluid. That is, the clutches may be locking up, transmission is getting hot and the fluid is actually vaporizing. That could account for the steam you are seeing.
As for the price.. I could not tell you for sure. I work in a heavy equipment shop and the transmissions cost about 20,000+ (yes, twenty grand) when it comes to rebuilds... That is wayyyyyyy over the price figure for an auto.. I have a friend that does truck transmissions for about 200.00 I think. So, that might be in the ballpark more?
