Anyone know anything about the steering boxes on our trucks? I don't have the link offhand but I have the link that one of the members made/posted about the '88 bronco box rebuild. Is the '88 steering box the same as an '84 or did ford use a different box? I don't want to rip the box out and be surprised with the wrong parts. LOL!
I don't truly know the answer to the question, but I think I can safely say there were several different steering gear boxes used. Attached are three pages from the Master Parts Catalog. The first shows an exploded view of the box. The next two show which boxes are used for what vehicle. As you can see, there are several different boxes, but whether or not they will interchange I don't know. I'd bet they will but that there are some internal differences. But, again, I do not know that - I'm guessing.
Yes, it will work. There are many boxes that are the same, some explorer units, broncos, F-Series, etc. If it is a good tight, non-leaking box, use it!

When you say "tight" what does that mean? My whole reasoning for rebuilding the box is because it's got slop. Just don't want to waste the time if a rebuild won't take the slop out of it.
It depends on what is causing the slop. There is only 1 adjustment when rebuilding the box, the gear intermesh (which can be set without rebuilding the box). The biggest reason for rebuilding a box is for power steering leaks. the screw on top sets the mesh, which is supposed to be done with an inch/lb torque wrench and nothing connected to the box. Some people just crank them down a bit but that isn't the correct way to do it.
If you have a spare one, just tearing is down it a pretty cool learning experience. It gave me an appreciation for not just randomly cranking down the load screw.
