I have a 84 Bronco II. Thewater pump is gone so I have the new part. The pulley on the harmonic balacer is in the way so I want to take it off. My question is: Which way does the nut on the balancer turn? To the driver side or passenger side?
First and foremost get a repair manual it will tell you everything you need to do to replace the water pump. On both 2.8 and 2.9 v6 engines the fan is screwed onto the waterpump. You will need a special tool to remove it. It is also reverse thread. when you get the old waterpump off clean the block surface off to ensure a good seal. also you might want to replace the thermostat since on 84 2.8's it is located in the lower hose(dumbest design ever award) I like the failsafe brand themostat since if they stick they stick open more expensive but worth every penny. especially since it is such a pain to change the thermostat.since most of the coolant is drained now is also a good idea to flush everything the heater core the block and the metal tubes better to do it now then to go through all the trouble later. when putting it back together use anti-seize on every bolt you take out (unless in the repair manual it tells you to use a dab of silicone Iwould still coat the threads with anti-seize) antifreeze is corrosive so anti-seize is a very good idea also there is a tightening sequence for the waterpump and a torque dont over tighten the bolts. I hope I was of help. Waterpumps are faily easy to do just time consuming.
