hey everyone, i have a 2004 ford f250 with a 5.4 triton with about 212,000 km, over the last year it has lost a noticeable amount of power and developed a knock. i have priced out rebuilds and replacment motors but the cost doesnt seem worth it (the 5.4 not having much power in the first place with not so great fuel economy) origonaly i wanted a 7.3 swap but that would also run big money and i was curious if a fuel injected 460 might be worth it if i had a donner truck? im sure it would fit just not to sure if the electrical might be a nightmare or not. right now the truck is just sitting and im not in a rush but i do need too make a decision about what to do with it. I would love to hear anyones oppinions weather this is a good or bad idea, if its worth the trouble? or what kind of problems i might run into? thanks
You would need to change the computer and wiring, 2 more cylinders to deal with. It would probably be easier to do a 12v cummins swap.
5.4's shouldn't really be that expensive to do if the rest of the truck is in good shape. A reman on ebay is about 1k, maybe even get lucky locally and pick one up cheaper or at least save the cost of shipping. If it isn't worth it then, any engine swap isn't really worth it.
Are you up to date on your maintenance? O2 sensors, fuel filter, oil changes, tranny/diff changes/etc?
the cheapest 5.4 i could find locally is just over 2 grand with 144,000 k on it or approximentley 1,500-2,000 for a rebuild and i would rather spend a little more and get better performance outta the truck, all the maintenace is up to date aside from the o2 sensors, do you know what a 12v swap cummins would require? as far as i know u need a custom exhaust manifold and a kit to make the bell houesing work.
FordCummins.com and destroked.com are both good resources for it; and there are a few members on here that have done the swaps, can probably read up on them in the engine swaps forum. It's not going to be 1-2 grand cheap, but performance wise those two engines would be worlds apart.
It's gonna be lots of work no matter what you do, but I vote for the V10. Since it's a factory option there's no custom fab work to be done, and because it's still a gas engine the majority of your fuel system should be able to be reused.
A good 20% more power without having to re-engineer everything. Sounds like a winner to me!
I agree that a stock 460 would be a nightmare (electrical AND transmission) and a step back in power. A tweaked 460 would be nice to drive, but still a nightmare to install. And expensive.
If you love diesels and have a lot of money, patience, and wrenching/debugging skills, the Cummins swap is nice.
But bang for the buck? I'd be looking for a totaled V10 of the same vintage and using the engine, transmission, engine wiring harness, and PCM from it.
well i guess the easiest and cheapest would be a 5.4 replacement, does anyone know of some not to exspensive power upgrades the truck already has some bolt ons, AFE cold air intake, diablo sport programmer and a flowmaster exhaust but still not to impressive power wise. i have heard about people putting pi heads on 5.4s but i dont know what kind of gain to expect or the cost.
