need to install reverse light

Hi guys,

We need to do a reverslight installation on my buddies F350 it has a IDI 7,3 with manual gearbox and 4wd.

My question is, does it take signal from a sensor from the gearbox or where does the backup light get it's signal?

Yes the back up light switch will be on the transmission, usually on the top in the shifter/top cover.

Okay thank you, how is it supposed to work? does the switch give ground when reverse gear is in or is it supposed to forward + when reverse gear is in?

It's just a simple plunger operated switch that makes contact when activated.. (shift to reverse)

They usually have power fed to them and pass it through when activated.. I guess you "could" complicate things and have power to the back up lights and wire the switch to provide a ground.. Question is : Why?

Thank you that was what I wanted to know. For some reason everything has been removed on this truck, the sensor is there but all wires are gone

Just remember............The power should only be fed to the switch when the key is on.... If fed hot all the time and it is parked in reverse the battery will suffer!!!!
