Do I have to do anything special to the emission system if I either removed the cat(s), drilled it out, or hollowed it out? The old ones could just have holes drilled in them...not sure about the newer ones. I could just install a 'high flow' cat, but we have no inspection system here in Arkansas. Thanks
If it were me, I would just swap out to a high flow unit. One, you'll get the power you want from the higher flow. Two, it wont possibly throw codes from your computer not reading the info from the cat. Thirdly, its better for the environment. There are too many vehicles on the road that shouldnt be on the road because of poor emmissions. So, one vote for high flow.
I'll third the proposal to keep a high flow cat.. And second the idea for the Bassani Y-pipe and cat.. 1.5" up to the "Y" then 3" in and out of the cat. all stainless construction except for the cat itself, air injection and O2 sensor ports in the stock location and its STILL cheaper than the OEM replacement from Ford. Just my $0.02.
Do you have to have headers for the Bassani "Y" pipe to bolt to or will they bolt to the exhaust manifolds? I want the extra HP but do not want the sound. I need a quiet unrestrictive system because I use my Bronco to get near my hunting area and do not want to scare every elk in 3 states.
The Bassani Y pipe will bolt directly to your stock exhaust manifolds.
You can use their headers too. If you use stock manifolds you will still need the donut gasket. If you go with the Bassani headers there is no gasket required between the headers and Y pipe.
Thanks to all for their replies and sugestions. I am leaning on removing the cat's and going with Flowmasters, but it isn't a done deal as of yet. Will I have to jumper the oxygen sensor so as not to confuse the computer or cause erratic response? Also, is the tool used to break apart the gas lines a dealer only purchase?
Jumpering the oxygen sensor would be a bad idea. The catalytic converter is meant to handle NOx emissions anyway, so whether it is there or not should not affect the oxygen content of the exhaust. Leave the sensor as it is.
