I don't know much about these newer trucks, but I found a newer F250 with the V10 for only $5,000. It has around 130k miles, but runs and drives well. It is the basic package, XL, white, regular cab, long bed, 4x4. The bed is beat to hell, but I was thinking that this is an ideal farm truck. Put on a bale bed, heavy duty bumper, more aggressive tires and I would have the ultimate farm truck...except I don't know much about the V10. Does they last long? How bad is the mileage? Plenty of power? What kind of stuff can a truck like this handle?
Not looking for an in depth specification outline, just honest opinions about this engine on this truck.
Thanks in advance.
The v10 is very powerful. My dads 01 pulls his 28 foot 5th wheel with ease. His is crew cab Shortbed 250 with 373 gears. Completely stock. About the hardest thing my 05 f250 v10 has seen so far is pulling out a few stumps. Average mileage depending on driving habits and maintence and gears is around 8-10 stock. Some people are seeing higher because of programmers. The motor will handle abuse of towing, the truck itself can handle a lot too. If u head to the super duty forum they have a FAQ forum that lists the weight that your truck could tow
A good friend traded his 99 in with 419,000 miles on it. Over the years I think he had 6 spark plugs fixed. The truck you are looking at would be a perfect plow truck too.
I traded in my 05 6.0 diesel for a 08 v-10 and have owned it for 4 yrs with no regrets. It pulls a 31 ft travel trailer on aregular basis, not to mention all the other work I have put the beast through. I know 4 other guys that have or had the v-10 in a motorhome and have had nothing but good things to say. If you buy it, it will do anything you ask of it The wheels will fall off before I get rid of it
They are very good engines. It is a good idea to check the plugs for tightness often and make sure they have at least 20ft of Torque on them. I get 11 MPG driving mine to work and 8-9 pulling a 31 ft Airstream. This is with 4.30:1 gears. The 3.73:1 trucks get a couple MPG more. If you drive it like you stole it you will get 8 MPG.
ok then boys sell me on the v10 vs powerstroke... i love my diesels but the v10 is so cheap to buy...any good mods to squeeze a little more mpg?? I love the roar of the gas motor
You wont see MPG's over 13 on a regular basis and that may be pushing it. Typically 9-12 for me. Mileage should be a consideration but not the only consideration. The tuner will do more for performance than MPG. Most say the CAI arent worth the money, but some still get them.
err...i kind of figured. what about an x-pipe open exhaust and k&n intake?...only bad part is i can get 40mpg out of a diesel ...
I'd love to see the diesel you can get 40mpg out of... Outside of a VW caddy, I don't think there is much out there that can pull it off. Especially with aggressive tires and a hay bale in the back.
You can expect 10-12 around town empty with stock tires and depending how light your foot is, and 14-15hwy. On the bright side, the truck runs on 87 which is ~30-40c cheaper than diesel, and the maintenance is a lot lower on it. 15 dollar oil changes, 10 dollar fuel filters, and you're set.
ya...it can be done (40mpg) but it does take alot of cash...youre right (different turbo etc...complete rebuild). so i can see where the v10 may be a better choice. Good point on the oil changes and maintenance too... any big difference on manual vs auto with the v10 mpg?
Buy a diesel. Anyone who thinks any diesel truck can be modified in any way to get 40 mpg needs no part of a V10. You will never be happy with it, and will think only bad things about the guys here who tell the truth about the V10. Buy a diesel...
