I have a strange leak into my cab ('71 F-250). With all the spring rain, I keep finding water on my floor. Deliberately spraying water on the windshield from the outside; found no leaks. But when it rains.............................
I checked my flooor after the last storm and found the drips seem to be coming from near where the wiper arm posts are mounted to the cab. Is there some sort of seal behind this? Or?
Doesn't look like it will be fun to tear into, but I am Tired of this leak
Any advice appreciated .
There is a gasket under the mount for the wiper arms...
Its held in with 3 bolts..You can get to the drivers side one by
removing the instrument cluster...
The passenger one, is tougher but can be done
So I just change a gasket. Is it rubber or fiber? Can I "make-my-own" or is it available otherwise?
Do I need to pull the wiper arms off first? If so, how do they release from the posts?
Thanks .
one thing you might try is some sealant up around the posts mounts under the dash, its not the same as changing the gasket
but my work, especially if its been leaking awhile and
rust is forming on the threads, you dont want to break a bolt off
up there like i did with my crewcab..
Well, fall is here and I have the dash apart (Rodent trouble). With the dash cluster and glove box removed, it seems straight forward; except for one problem: How do I get the wiper arms off?! ! Either they are frozen or I am out of luck?
Take a pair of needle-nosed pliers, a screwdriver wrapped with cloth to protect against scratches.
Lay the wrapped up srewdriver beside where the wiper arm attaches & with the spread open pliers on both sides of the arm attachment pry it up and it will slide off.
spray a little WD-40 up there before! most people forget to do this get impatient and end up stripping or scratching something!
There is a little tab that sticks out on the arm, pry it outwards and the whole arm should pop off.
They make a special tool to remove these wiper arms if the above does not work well for you. They cost about $12 and look like a spark plug wire removal tool.
69crewcab, you were right. There is lots of rust under the mounts, though not through to the cowl; just surface rust. Wire brush fixed it . Oh, don't feel bad; I broke one of the bolts off too. Even with penetrating fluid, I still lost it .
Nothing like a little silicone .
New gaskets were obtained from *** truck and fit well.
Mill1on, the arms DID pull-off, they just needed some coaxing and a liitle WD-40 (thanks Big Blue).
So, I am all set for winter......I hope .
Well it sounds like that is a older truck problem that we or will or it's waiting to happen to all ford truck owners. For a number of yrs, I too had a wonder water leak that would only leak when it rained like some of you guys. Well any way my gasket was made of 1\8''cork so just made a replacement and that fixed the wonder leak 2yrs. ago....
