turbo help please....

Short and simple. Is there supposed to be a o-ring or gasket between the turbo and spider?

O ring. Only gasket I know of on the 7.3 is the head gasket.

Ok. I didn't see 1 when I pulled the spider so I didn't put 1 back in. And at 65mph I get 2 psi of boost

YES, you can see the groove on the turbo outlet where it is supposed to be.

Sounds like the OP is done with this thread so I'll shamelessly hijack it. No offense taken if a mod makes my rantings go away.

Are there more gaskets on a 7.3? As a relative noob I'm genuinely curious. Seems like it's all o rings, loc-tite, gasolia and RTV. IMHO vc gaskets don't count since they are reusable forever, barring mishap. I'd say to qualify as a gasket in the traditional sense it would require replacement when disturbed, otherwise it's an ornate o ring that is intended to be reused.

Ah, IIRC the hpop has some gaskets involved that are not generally reused. So there's something. Maybe the oil cooler? Any others?

In my mind I've always figured there are 4 basic ways to seal stuff.
  1. machined surface to surface
  2. flexible sealers (RTV, Silicone etc)
  3. O-rings
  4. Gaskets

I think the 7.3 has all options in play. The lion's share seem to be O-rings which is helpful for maintenance since they can generally be re-used in many cases. Gaskets (by my own definition) generally aren't meant to be re-used so that may be why they aren't as common as O-rings on these engines. From memory there are a few that fall into the 'gasket' category....HPOP and Oil Cooler come to mind. I suppose the doughnut gaskets at the up-pipes qualify as well as the flat gasket at the dipstick flange fitting. I think there is a front cover gasket as well.... (I am probably forgetting a few others...)

I agree with you though...even though we call it a 'valve cover gasket' it's really an O-ring spacer gasket or maybe a combo 'O-ring/gasket/electrical pass thru' (if you will...)

My question is...how the heck oil didn't come pouring out of there? I blew one of the two orings in there and lost a gallon of oil on my way to work. Noticed the puddle when I parked it. Gut dropped!!
