I have a 78 f-250 400 400 * No M * .
It runs great til this happens. This happens about every 15,000 miles. Ill be driving down the road and it dies. No cutting out or anything. It just stops firing. I have been changing out the whole distributor to get going again. However it keeps happening.
I would like to know why this is going out. And how to solve this.
From what you describe it sounds like maybe your distributor pick up may be going bad. If this happens regularly you probably have a wiring problem. Describe the part that is failing better or buy a repair manual that has the proper terminology in it.
If you changed the entire dizzy and it did it again I would suspect the spark box is intermittant. Do you have the Dura Spark? Some say only buy the Ford unit for replacement.
I thought about the module but if replacing the dizzy fixes the problem for a while a problem with an open wire or a bad engine ground destroying the distributor ground may be the problem. Another one of those "aftermarket" spark box problems -Of course replacing the module may solve that "wiring problem", if it is replaced with a Motorcraft unit
Interesting problem here, and the user has not offered more info. Maybe he found the problem.
Spark box, if thats the little box thats mounted to the side of the finder well. That drips that glue like tree sap. Then yes. I replaced that with a Wells years ago. I think because it was leaking. Could that be burning out my distributer pickup.
Check and clean your body ground for your battery also. The stock battery ground lead had a welded on tab that bolted to the frame or fender (I don't remember which) then it contiued down to a bolt near the starter. If your cable has been replaced, or if it is dirty, you may not have a proper body ground. You may need to run a ground strap from the engine to the firewall.
When you get your new ignition modulator mount it to the inner fender using 1/4" high spacers to allow cooling air flow under it.
Rat a tat, when you install the new ignition module, pay close attention to the black wire going from it to the distributor. This is the ground wire, and it's the only one for the system. If you have a bad connection at the plug-in, this would cause the module to heat up and fail, and cause all sorts of intermittent problems.....
You people are the most helpful I have found. I will look at all the ground options. This makes the most sence. The only bad thing is it will take several thousand miles to ease my mind. Even then its allways their.
