Hey all when I was a kid I remember a family friend had an 84 idi 2x with a multiplier behind a t19 thus giving it a fairly tall OD. I was only 5 so I didn't look to much into the mechanics of it all. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about those and if you can put one on a 4x
you're looking at either a gear-vendors overdrive or a brownie - an auxiliary transmission. the gear vendors is expensive - 3 grand for a new one, but sometimes used one are available for a lot less. i wouldn't mind having one, but don't need to drop that kind of money for it.
as for putting something on a 4x4, they're usually installed behind the T-case, which is fine only if you NEVER engage the overdrive while in 4x4. if something were able to be installed between the trans and t-case, that would be even better, but would require you to replace the front driveshaft as well.
so in short, it can be done, but expect to spend a decent chunk of money to do it.
US Gear used to make an over drive that installed in front of the transfer case. It was not hydraulic like the Gear Vendor and you could start out in over or under unlike the Gear Vendor which isn't supposed to be shifted until the pressure is built. Gear Vendor says around 25 mph if I remember right.
There was an outfit in Salt Lake that built a married 4sp main, 4sp aux that gave under and over drive. Cost was about the same as a Gear Vendor.
