Go over to www.Fordification.net and decode them.
IIRC, if it's 2WD and the third position of the code is a J that it means the rig came equipped with power steering. For a 4WD, the third position denotes the axle model and rating.

I have my eye on a Dana 60 with a posi in it out of a '72 F250 for $300. Is it worth that?

An axle shaft has two ends... and they are correspondingly splined different.

The D60, if also a '72 will only be 16 spline, so it's worth far less than $300 if that's the case.
