then that needs fixing too. if your misfiring and its not registring seems odd?
mine never once sent a CEL, except after i started unplugging COPs well it was running. otherwise it was a minor enough. miss that did not trip the computer..but made driveablity horrible!
Yeah it does seem odd, which is why I'm wondering what's going on. The check engine light isn't on, and the computers don't read anything. It's irritating.
A miss caused by a bad boot won't show up anywhere either.
Did you ever go back and change #4 & #5? That would be the first thing I would do. It's not as scary as it looks once you get into it. I think I just used a 6" extension to brake the plug loose, removed the wrench and turned it the rest of the way by hand. A magnetic screwdriver for the COPS retaining screw would be helpful to get that started back in.
After spilling coolant in mine a few weeks ago, it ran real bad for a few days until it all evaporated. It never did throw a code.

It's even easier when you remove some stuff around them.
I wonder how many times people have replaced the cop and boot at the same time and blame it on the cop. My cops are fine after 160k miles but I have replaced boots.
My COPS were all original at 152k and seemed fine to me. The boots looked excellent after 90k, but I changed them anyway. I think I could have just changed plugs and re-greased the old boots.
I think a lot of these bad COPS only need a new boot. I no longer consider a boot good when I change plugs. I don't change spark plugs, I change spark plugs and boots at the same time. Most all boots that have been in a motor for over 30,000 miles will have small cracks in them. It is very easy to check them just squeeze the bottom of the boot together with two fingers and the cracks will show. These boots just get baked in the heads of these engines. Its easy to blame it on the plugs but if the boot is arcing fire of course the plug will look bad.

You were smart to change the boots because they develop cracks you might not see. I don't think greasing the boots would be smart though, all it does is attract moisture, dirt, and rots the rubber. All you need it a tiny bit on the tip of the spring to prevent corrosion. I put heavy grease around the top of mine to seal them but I will change them before the rubber softens too much. Anything below that area should be dry.

Totally agree, if I had all the money that was spent needlessly on cops just for Ford trucks I could pay cash for a new truck. Change plugs-change boots.

This is what I did, (all 10) after doing so I put the originals (all but one) back. And bought a new motorcraft.
