Damn V-10's

Well I have a 2000 Ford excursion with the 6.8L in it, only 148,000 miles on it, and I'm having a bit of a problem: she's misfiring. Bad. It started at around 147,250, and it's been going on ever since. She had the platinums in for the spark plugs, and I've replaced both the fuel and air filter, and 8/10 spark plugs (it was late and I didn't wanna work on 4&5 any longer), but I've taken it to multiple auto shops and had them plug the computer in, no readings, codes, nothing. Besides those last 2 spark plugs, is there anything else that could cause the misfire? It's not like she has a lot of miles on it, from what I've read the V-10's have one of the rest lifespans besides diesels, even if their MPG is pathetic.

COP's, COP boots, COP plugs, COP harness, injectors, injector orings, bent valves, valve seats, rocker arms.... that is all I can think of for now.

It's always those dang Cops! You'll get better and better at checking them over time - especially No. 5.

My 2001 V-10 developed a miss the end of last summer. Replaced all 10 plugs, boots, PCV and #4&5 COP with no luck. Finally gave my Mass air flow sensor and throttle body a good cleaning and that did the trick.

Do the whole job and get back to us........................10!

I do know a bit about trucks but the shorthand gets me, what are COPs?

And thanks kev, I'll give that a shot this weekend

COP= Coil On Plug

Good luck

MrThinroyy 05-30-2012 10:02 PM

I've already replaced the coils and boots, plugs, and harnesses. I'll check out the Mass Air Flow Sensor like keving said, then if she's still sputtering I'll look into the injectors, rocker arms, etc. Thanks everyone, hopefully I'll get her back up to full steam soon.

i'm going to say coils. i've had brand new ones be bad. finally spent the big bucks on motorcraft coils last time after fighting a miss issue since i had bought my ex.. that was in march, no issues since!

Those guys in the rear view mirror when you are speeding...............or the little coils for every cylinder.

+1 new ones can be bad.

is your check engine light working?

MrThinroyy 05-31-2012 02:00 PM

Yeah the light works but it's not on, like I said, I've actually gone to the shops and they plugged it into the computer and nothing came up.

fatherdano 05-31-2012 02:26 PM

then that needs fixing too. if your misfiring and its not registring seems odd?

MrThinroyy 05-31-2012 02:36 PM

Yeah it does seem odd, which is why I'm wondering what's going on. The check engine light isn't on, and the computers don't read anything. It's irritating.

COP's- Coil on Plug. Buy a good one and move it around till you find the bad one. Start by replacing the two plugs you neglected to do. Good luck and keep us informed.
