Driveshaft phasing...
...who would have thought. Been chasing this slight vibration for a few months. Replaced a slightly bad u-joint 2 weeks ago. marked the slip-yoke so as to put it back the same way.(which was wrong) Didn't seem to help. Researching this very subject and found another thread on it and determined mine was off several splines, p.o. put it back wrong. O.M. gosh what a difference it made, took it out after I lined it up proper and run it to 75 mph and it was like cruising in an airplane!

I know your pain, I was chasing a vibration last year it can be a real pain to figure out. Glad you found the problem.
I am kind of surprised there is not a wide spline in the slip yoke on these trucks. I know I had one vehicle that did, not sure which one, might have been my '79 F250.

Yeah , I would like to know how you figured out the drive shaft was not lined up properly ??
I have replaced all 3 u-joints , center carrier bearing and still have a vibration . I have tried different shims for the center bearing but it seems to make it worse .
Could you provide a link to where you found your information ??
Next for me is to take the driveshaft in for balancing .

Chris the drive shaft has to be the same on both ends If the splines are off it will throw it our of phase .http://www.drivelinespecialist.com/Tech1.htm

Yes it was easy to see it was off, I just put it back on so the front yoke lined up with the yoke on the slip joint. It was off maybe 30 degrees or so.

Right, but if the splines are off by two, how easy is that to notice while laying under the truck? I can see it being 180 deg off if you don't mark it and getting the two piece system out of balance. To be off only a few splines sounds like it was just an eyeball error trying to get it lined back up. I probably would have done the same as Bill and just mark it and put it back together without noticing it being a hair off.

Of course Bill has now said it was a good 30 deg off and easily visible, that changes things a little.

If it was off 1 spline you could feel it at some speed, usually 55 to 60 mph. You would most likely not look at it unless it vibrating. Being out of phase will cause damage to U-joints.

Mine was off I don't know how much I didn't have time to mess with it so I had my wife take it to a shop for me and it turned out I stripped the splines in it and had to have it rebuilt. It vibrated since the day I got it and chewed threw ujoints like they were plastic. All fixed now and I'm happy with it

I had been chasing a vibration issue on my 99 for awhile, new carrier all new u-joints didn't fix it. Driveshafts were timed correctly also, had rear driveshaft balanced still no luck......I never thought and they never told me that both shafts have to be balanced together.....took it back and problem solved!

You can tell my eye ball sighting down the 3 U-joints. the back ones are always the same as they are fixed to the rear shaft. but the front one can be seen out even by one spline without any tools.
