Hey guys i have a 86 f150 with the 300 inline 6 with factory ac. Now i have went through alot of troubleshooting to get where i am at now. So here is what i have. I changed the high and low side ports to r134a, got a new belt and tried to shoot freon into the system, when i realize that my compressor doesnt turn on at all. i panic. So i cleaned the connector and retested. Nothing. So i took my power probe and checked to see if i have power and ground. I do so what i do next is connect the connector back to the compressor and use my power probe to give source voltage directly to the compressor. that is because there wasnt enough pressure to turn the compressor on. An it turns on! sweet! I then proceeded to shoot more freon into the system and it wouldnt hold pressure. I shot some more and say that on the d/s on the condenser after the high side line connects to the condenser where there is a bend has a nice size crack in it shooting all the freon out when the compressor is energized. My question is what trucks also have the same identical condenser as my 86 with the 300 inline 6? Will i have to just by a new one? Or can i pull one from a 351 truck or something? All advice is welcomed. Thank you guys
Go to Autozone's site, plug in your truck, and look up the new condensor for it, and write the number down. Then go up and change the truck to a different year, different engines, etc. Each time you change the truck, look up the condensor and see if it's the same part numbr. I would imagine similiar v8's(302, 351w) had the same one since the compressor is in the same place.
You also are going to need a vacuum pump. You cannot just stick freon in the system, because there is air in the system and that will keep it from cooling. Also, to get the compressor to run for filling, find the low pressure switch mounted on on near the accumulator, and unplug the plug and jump the connections in the plug, and that will make it run enough to fill it.
It's a bit of a stretch, but hopefully I can save you some yard work depending on what your local junk yard has in stock.
I pulled my smog equipment from two early 80's sedans. A Grenada and a Fairmont. The PN's were identical to my 86 with a 300. And, an 82 with 300 (ran that check since I have a DSII swap). Just a thought n case you see one. Around me the obscure sedans are MUCH less picked over than the trucks.
Also don't forget to check an 87-96. One of those with a 300 may well have come '134 stock.
I have a perfectly good one from my 86 F350. I followed Archion's recommendation and installed a 94-96/7 condenser to work better with R134. BTW, even without the carpet in, it will freeze you.
The system is open to air, so just replace the condensor with new and replace the reciever/dryer as well since its usually recomended it be replaced whenever the system has been opened anyway.
Thank u everyone for your advice. I also appreciate your help Franklin2 bc ur methid is easy and relatively quick . So thanks everyone. I do what to get a new condenser but I just want to see if other problems exist. And u guys are correct about air in the system stopping it from properly cooling. These ac aystems are designed to work below atmospheric pressure and also within the air we breathe there is moisture. And moisture in the system doesn't help either.
